Help! Lots of grease behind passenger side front wheel

Went missing and rode through a good size puddle and on my way out heard an awful metal on metal grinding noise took it out of 4 wheel drive and checked under grease was everywhere behind the wheel. What is this and how expensive a fix I bought a new cv axle but second look I think it may be wheel bearing?

no, it's just your cv boot.

cv boot tore, that's what let all the grease out. Since you're hearing noises the axle joint may have broke as well. You have a new axle so swap them out yourself and it won't cost anything but some time. Dealer will charge you hundreds.

Before I knew how to replace a on of the front axles I paid for a dealer to do it. It was $600 and that was a few years ago. I got completely taken, but didn't know any better at that point. You can get a Chinese steel axle for about $90 from Advanced Auto Parts or you can order a remanufactured one from CVJ Axles - Remanufactured Axles & Power Racks that is OEM quality. If you do order from them then you can send in your busted one and they'll give you some money for it. The work might take you a while the first time you do it but some of the guys on here that break them often can replace one on the trail in 30 minutes.

Those boots must have been brittle. No lift and it still tore (at least I think those are OEM shocks).

Spend a little extra more $$$ for a CV from NAPA. If you need help installing them, just ask.

It took me about an hour and 15 minutes to do one side, and about 45 minutes to do the other. Now I think I could knock out both sides in an hour or so. If you buy the new axles from Napa or OReillys ( I went with Masterpro NEW from Oreilly) they are ready to drop in.
