Well... I broke it.

Attempted to run Moody Hill today. I put my front swaybar back on in anticipation of this trail, as I had a feeling that I wouldn't want as much travel as I have without it.

On the first optional obstacle I attempted, I tore the driver's CV boot. I'm honestly surprised it made it this long through all of the trails I've done! Alright, no big deal, I'll just reboot it later.





Then came the second optional obstacle.. the rock quarry. I'm not 100% sure what happened, but I think the extra travel I gained from the UCAs combined with being full lock put the CVs at a weird angle. Apparently the sway bar wasn't enough... Heard a pop, took a look, and saw the CV basically in pieces.





The CV would flop around, as it wasn't connected at all at the hub. I was able to pull it out entirely without taking out a single bolt. I also covered the diff opening as best I could, hopefully keeping all of the dirt out.

I think I'm going to go ahead and replace both CVs while I'm at it, hopefully giving me a spare (the current driver's side). Limiting straps are also going to be installed sometime soon, so that I hopefully don't have this issue again!

On another note, after installing the UCAs, slightly banked turns (think driving up a canyon road) make my skid control come on. Don't have a clue why, or how to fix it, but it's another thing that made its way onto the list of stuff to do.

3rd Gen Yaw Calibration

I'm guessing you didn't get to try either of the big ledges at the quarry?

That's a pretty fun trail... used to be a lot more interesting before they smoothed out the beginning of it after the flood damage in recent years but still the option to get pretty wild with all the lines at the quarry.

Next time you head up that way give me a shout if you want some company.

Well, yes, I did get to try it. The bottom ledge is what broke everything- I'm honestly upset I couldn't get up it, considering some of the other things I've been able to do. A locker would have let me walk right up it... like a lot of obstacles.

Yeah, the trail up to that point was just a dirt road. The quarry sure is pretty wild.. and also very cool.

I'll definitely let you know! I'll definitely be going back once I get it all fixed up. Can't be beat by the trail.

So far it has not. I've noticed a very slight bit of discoloration on the waterproof part of it, but it hasn't melted at all and still works like new. I'm almost tempted to say it might even just be mud that stuck to it... I tried to wipe it off and it wouldn't, so it's hard to say if it's heat related or not.

Yep, stock! In Moab I tore the book of the upper and lower ball joints. CVs remained intact... until now. I'm thinking I'll be swapping in some Napa ones, still undecided though.

Well you shredded one of your factory CVs so perhaps you could use that lifetime warranty.

Damn dude that sucks. I'm certain you could do it open, I did it before the locker but having spotters get me lined up helped. That's good you got it off the trail alright though!

That was my thought... chances are I'll end up breaking one again, so a lifetime warranty would be great.

Yeah, I think I can, I just need a better line. That sand-stuff was soft, I'd just dig instantly...

New CVs!

Went ahead and already replaced the CVs. I ended up getting 2 new Napa ones. This seemed like a good route due to price ($90 at my local store) and the lifetime warranty on them.

Replacement went very smoothly- I struggled a bit with the first side (couldn't get it to seat back in the diff), and it took me about 2 hours, but the second side I got done in just about 30 minutes after I had the technique down.








You can see the ones ones were pretty beat up... that passenger side one looks pretty much destroyed. I'm still pretty sure that I'll be able to reboot it and keep it as a spare, but I'll have to get those boots off and make sure everything inside is still fine.

I believe I found out what actually happened after I was able to mess with it when my tire was off. At full droop, even with the swaybar, the hub is unable to spin with the angle it is at. Slightly higher, not a problem, but it just won't at that point. I'm really hoping I'll be able to install some limiting straps to stop that from happening again.

Awesome build. I love the way your 4runner looks. I have a question about your rear panhard bar. I saw in your mods list that you dont have an adjustable one or a drop bracket. Have you had any issues with these parts and is your axle still center on the vehicle without them?
