Will a 285 or 255 fit in the spare tire hoist?

I'm going to be ordering a lift and tires in the next few months and am trying to determine the best way to carry a full size spare. I don't have an aftermarket bumper with a swingout carrier and can't swing a $1200 bumper on top of $2500 worth of lift and tires all at once.

Will a 33ish" spare fit under the rear floor in the stock spare location?

My spare is a 285/70 17. As [MENTION=120787]Bijan[/MENTION] said, I keep it slightly under inflated. Plus I keep it in rotation with the other tires, so the wear helps provide more clearance. I carry a small compressor, so I can air it back up if needed. I have about a 1" gap between the tire and the panhard bar.


[MENTION=116387]Unner[/MENTION] makes a good point below, I forgot to mention that I did have to remove my hitch. I had the square tube hitch, the 285 was not going to fit, since I have never towed anything, the hitch had to go.

It depends on what hitch you have. My OEM hitch I couldn't fit a 265/75/16 underneath. And not all OEM hitches are the same, the offered different ones. Not sure if some were port installed and some dealer installed or what.

I got a different non oem hitch that let me fit a 255/75/17 32.2" tire with space to spare. And now I have a swing out to fit my 33's :)
 
Which aftermarket hitch did you have? Mine's OEM and hangs waaaay low, but right now it's also my recovery point so I can't just take it off.

I can't remember where I read it, but I saw someone mentioned that there's an aftermarket hitch that has a much better departure angle than the OEM hitch.

Yeah I was looking at those the other day. I don't know why anyone would spend that kind of money on something that's not a real bumper.

Fabbing stuff is off the table for now. I've done it before, but I don't have the tools or space to do it at the moment, unfortunately.


Edit - realized you linked a slightly different product. The one I saw was something like $900 but it had a hi-lift mount and jerry can rack, etc.

either way I figured since I went to a 287/75/16 it wouldn't fit under the body. so I was going to Fab one of these.

I wouldn't run without a hitch personally. It protects your bumper offroad because it drags and doesn't care. It also protects it on road. You get rear ended even slowly in a drive thru or something and don't have a hitch it's gonna tear up your bumper and hatch. The hitch is solid and provides protection.

I completely agree. I got rear ended by a caddy with no insurance. His car was totaled and mine had some scuffs on tow hitch. I would have lost my truck without the tow hitch.

OP I could not for a 285. I have to carry mine in the back.
 
Yeah the hitch stays until I can get a good rear bumper with a tire carrier. I guess I'm going to lose my lunchtime nap spot until I get that bumper. :ohwell:

my 265/75 wouldn't fit with the factory hitch, so i had it stored inside until i got a tire carrier.
