so i just bought my 3rd gen 4runner and i love it but im considering buying some new tires. i have some discount tire brand on mine that looks like an all-terrain. what im trying to look for is the best tire that works great with in town/highway/off-road tires. trying to see my options for a smoother ride hopefully because the highway driving i do, but i also love camping and taking it up the beautiful mountains i have here. id like to hear your opinion on what you have and why you love your tires

intown/highway and offroad tires are two different tires completely though..
You're either going to need to go with a tread pattern/design that's a four-season type, highway tire if you do the majority of your driving on the streets and prefer/desire a quiet ride with least affect on your mpg
conversely, if you plan to actually go do some serious off road and crawling in your 4Runner, or if you're on the trails a lot in general, then you'll likely prefer an A/T or M/T tire. But you're going to have a noisier ride and it'll affect your mpg a bit.
if you're handy with a jack/tools you can simply keep a second set of offroad tires on an old set of rims to swap on for weekends when you're out on the trails.

I've used HanKook dynapros, very good on and off, lasted nearly 70k, fuel mileage was not affected, about
Used goodyear duratracs - noisy above 35mph, tough to balance for over 65mph, pretty good offroad. Huge affect on fuel mileage, down to 16.
Using Michelin LTX A/T2s now, super well balanced at 85+ and quiet beyond belief, very good off road (just as good as the duratracs perhaps better), mileage is still too soon to tell but ok. These do both on and off the best of what I've found so far. The side snipes do a great job of grabbing grass, mud, sand to keep the vehicle moving, I've pushed them to the limit fording thru mud and water up over the side sills, they never stop rolling. Also affect fuel mileage, about 17.

I had 265/70/17 BFG KO2's previously. And loved them, but got kinda noisy after 10k. But great A/T tire with a very tuff sidewall.
Just put on a fresh set of 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grappler 116Q (4 Ply)
Very quiet and smooth ride. I yet have to test its off road performance. But I foresee this tire as being a true hybrid on and off road capable tire. Price point for the 4 ply ones I have are not bad to say the least, and they look very aggressive.

I have very limited 4runner experience but do have some experience with tires on my 2012 F150 FX4 that I used to own. On that truck, it came with very complaint Goodyear Wranglers. They were a P rated tire (Passenger, as opposed to LT...Light Truck). They rode soft and were quiet, but looked like a minivan tire and were very wallowy when loaded up with our 27' travel trailer. After ~40k miles I replaced them with an LT BFG KO2 (E-load range). These tires were aggressive looking and were fairly quiet, but had noticeably stiffer sidewalls. I actually wanted that for heavy trailer towing, but they rode quite a bit stiffer and were noticeably heavier than the stock tires they replaced. My gas mileage dropped and the suspension had a tendency to crash a bit over harsh bumps. I did have upgraded Bilstein shocks on it.
My 4Runner has some Bridgestone Dueler ATs on it which seem like a reasonable compromise. They are a P rated tire. They ride and drive nice on the street and seem to have enough tread to do ok in light offroading. They did nice in some deep snow/icy I drove in last weekend in the mountains.
If you want to maintain good on road manners, pay very close attention to tire weight. Also, unless you plan on doing heavy rock crawling, you may want to stick to a P (passenger) tire or at least a load C LT (Light Truck) tire. These will be more compliant and lighter than a beefy Load E LT tire which you might not like on the road.

33" Falken Wildpeak ATs in E load here, awesome tires. Super quiet on the highway, rides nice and smooth even with the thicc e-load rating and great off-road. Not great in mud but then again they're not a mud terrain.

It all depends what you want to do with your truck. I have a set of Cooper Adventurers on mine from Pep Boys, which is their version of the Cooper Discoverers. It’s quiet on the road, and dwell in mud, dirt, and snow. I’m not looking to do hard core wheeling or overlanding, so for what I want out of my truck, they work well. I got them on sale too, so tires, mounting and balancing, and alignment was less than $750 OTD. These tires are rated for 55k miles.

I run BFG 255/85R16 Mud Terrains in the spring, summer and fall and 235/85R16 General Altimax Arctic snow tires in the winter. My wife had stock size Michelins on her 05 and is now running Goodyear Duratracs. The mudders howl on road alot (which was expected and doesn't bother me). Michelins were super quiet but were useless in any amount of snow (they were almost worn out when we bought the 4Runner). The Duratracs are awesome, not too noisey and have nice manners on the pavement. If you want the longest lasting, quietest best balancing tires get Michelins in the stock size(expensive). If you want some offroad capability get a good brand all terrain or agressive all season tire.

Goodyear Authority. I have been running them on all my vehicles since they came out.
Excel in everything except on metal. They are and become pretty noisy though but I am deaf so who cares.

Hands down for what you describe is the BFG KO2. I run 285/70/17’s.

I'm going on 8 years and over 40k miles on 285/75-16 goodyear duratracs. I have zero complaints that some speak of. Great in the snow, great on/off road. Mileage on my rig has always been a solid 18.x mpg since buying it bone stock 9 years ago.

I'm running the 265 hankook dynapro ATs on 16" rims half of the year, and in the summer (wheelin season) I swap out to 17" rims w/32" MTs that ride rough af lol

295/70/17 Ridge Grappler - Very good tire in everything but rain. Worst tire I have ever had in the rain.
285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W - Great tire in all road conditions, best tire I have ever had.
On there way are a set of 295/70/17 Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 tires which seem to get great reviews, we'll see!
