Considering some grown-up tires in 255/85/16 C range.....

It used to be that there weren't many options for 16" wheels but it seems there have been some changes in the tire industry lately. I have worn out a set of Patagonia M/Ts in 265/75/16 (that cost me only $126 each at America's/Discount Tire!). They were a bit of an uninformed purchase as I only used them in heavy muck about 5 times in 3 years. I went for look and low price, TBH. I have been holding off on the 17" rims that I would have needed to open up more options but it seems that the 33" pizza-cutters are back in 255/85/16 in load range C. One example is the Falken Wildpeak A/T4WLT255 /85 R16 112S C1 at $257 per tire and 59lbs each. Not too bad in today's world. I know Falken AT3s had some balancing issues in the past. Anyone out there liking a particular brand of 33" pizza-cutters in C range ? Please share any experiences you may have. I'm not as much of a mudder as I thought and need a more grown-up combo tread, sadly. I only air down to 15lbs and am running stock Star wheels. TIA

Edit - I know this has been covered to death but looking for current intel.

I have a 5th Gen but was considering basically the same thing, taller, slightly more narrow tires, 255/80-17's and wondered if they would rub at all. I actually have a 2" level kit on it already.
 
Well, it sounds like there are no objections or better deals, so I will probably go with some C-range LTs and call it a day! Falkens are made by Sumitomo, so I'm keeping it JDM in a way...

I don't have any useful inputs but am considering going the same route, so please post photos and impressions!

I came super close to doing my Yoko's in that size, but
I cheaped out since I'd also need a matching spare.

I'm also trying to soften up a tad with the 6-ply as opposed to the more common 10ers. Also, I haven't carried a spare for over a year - just a little ARB tread-puncture kit, a set of Glue-Treads and a compressor, but haven't needed them. To confirm that I'm a complete idiot, I also have been carrying around a spare OEM 5 star wheel (that I scored from Sean of TtTM fame) that would not help me at all unless I come across a beater spare at a used tire yard (which was kinda the plan but now even more unlikely to find one in this size.....) I'll probably have to buy a 5th tire before the first rotation. Looking forward to that new-tire ride feel - can't beat it!

Here are the specs from the Falken site . Any red flags there? Tiresize.com says this size is usually only 10.0" wide, but whatever.

It looks good. Honestly I can't tell the ride difference from the stock c load to e load tires. But then again I don't run the e's at 60 psi (right now they are 25-26ish psi, did the chalk test).

I have 265/75r16 baja boss's in e load, my original plan was to go with what you are, 255/85r16, but at the time it was just mud terrains available. When these wear out I'm going 255/85. Hopefully by then there will be even more options.

Please let us know how they are. Just buy 5 tires. Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. Buy once cry once.
 
I ran some C's for a minute never again, too much sidewall roll at pressure using chalk test.
3 ply sidewall of E's how I use em a winner, 290# boat tongue weight, trail air down, coming in hot exit ramp. lol

AT4W have a 3-ply (Duraspec - whatever that means) sidewall on the C load.

I am undersprung in the front. I went to 33s and I've got work to do. I have OME 881 (no extra weight) springs in front on 5100s and a full set of 4XI heavy steel skids and a steel bumper. Oops. Wasn't a problem with 32s. I did a quick pinch-weld mod before the tire shop, but left the lower fixing screw on the bottom of the Limited flares intact. Those will need to come off and I knew that yesterday. The kids at the tire shop never even stopped to consider rubbing was a possibility and were shocked when I told them they would in reverse full lock. They looked like they were going to get in trouble but I told them they won't see me again......LOL. The tires look very Normcore to me compared to the 32 M/Ts. Like they should have been factory. The ride is so nice, of course, as new tires do. I drove 250 miles after getting them installed and they 'feel' great on the highway - like grown-up tires. I can have a conversation in the cabin now, if I can convince any family members to get back in. A couple of pics from my phone with on cracked lens. It does some distortion. Anyone want draw a line on how much to cut on pic 1? I haven't got an alignment yet and will ask for the most caster within spec they can do with the factory setup. I kinda went into this half-assed., per normal. I'm replacing both CVs next weekend. That should be good for a few laughs.

Thanks to Sean of TTTM for the spare wheel!! I don't really carry a spare ( ARB puncture kit, Glue Treads, and a compressor) - and now I cannot. When I camp I will figure something out.

I got them direct from @_austins_adventures on IG, I believe. The person who makes them (as a hobby I'd say - not a fulltime business) sells the through Opt Offroad. They are great for those that sleep in their rigs - fresh air/no bugs. The price seems higher than a few years ago which isn't surprising. You could definitely make something yourself but I wanted to support the maker - seems like a nice guy.

Think you're on right track maxing out caster might solve rub. Have thought using BFH hitting
that screw mounting surface moving it rearward might do the trick.

Yeah somebody there was listening. It might be 3 plys of butter but it's better than 2, i suppose. There are 3 Sumitomo (Falken) plants - Buffalo, Japan, and Thailand. I was hoping for the first 2 but whatever....

I didn't realize you get the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake on these tires. That alone makes them intriguing for me. My A/T3W's didn't have that when I bought them years ago. Time to upgrade!
 
Tire weight can tell of tire construction a comparison with Cooper ST Maxx E same size
Faulken C's a pound lighter there be some beef in those C's that a good sign.
 
3 ply sidewall load C's are awesome on the 3rd gen. Love mine. Such a better experience for n ride and power. I was super excited about the KO3 in 285/75/17 in C..... but it looks like we get to wait until 2026 for that tire....

The Toyo and nitto options I like are all 66 lbs....

It really sucks that there isn't much to choose from on a load C tire. I wouldn't even mind a standard load tire if they did it in 3 ply sidewall, but no one does it sadly...

I wished I could get a 265 wide, 33-34" tall load C tire on the sub 60 lbs range on a 16" wheel. It just doesn't exist which sucks.

May have to take a serious look at these AT4's. I want an MT, but have a hard time getting excited about the the weight penalty from 17" wheels and 66-72 lb tires. It would be a 25-30 lbs jump on each tire...
