Anyone installed the 5th gen mirror covers with the blinker and puddle lights?

External packaging (bubble wrap, tape, plastic bag-type materiel) looked good. Tore that open & cardboard box was a little crushed. Everything inside was fine though. Tested the lights & they all work, mine had none of the lights installed in the housing but no biggie as they'd have to be removed for paint anyway. Not overly impressed with light output BUT it was in bright sunlight AND they weren't actually viewed installed in the proper position.

Will advise when installed...

CookieRoe, the mirror just pops off from its normal position? Or do you have to fold it in at all?

12 days?? Wow, that's great. I'm a couple days away from wiring up the turn signal lights. When I first turned on the puddle lights (in the day), I was underwhelmed, but at night, they are very noticeable. You'll love 'em!

Mirror: grab the mirror toward the bottom and gently pull it out until it hits its limit. Next you are supposed to get a flat head screw driver and pry the two button clips off (these are the only clips by the way). I never did use a screwdriver. Anyway, THEN, grab the mirror and gently (until it snaps) downward. It will slide off. I did this a several times by now. I was sort of rough with it, but it never broke.......... (insert sexual joke here)........

EDIT: When removing your mirror, IF it's heated, be sure to label the 2 wires that are crimped onto the mirror. They are both black wires, so label them so you reinstall them correctly. Ask me how I know (yeah, it was a "oh sh*t moment".

How it looks just after you snap and remove the mirror: NOTE: the two black wires for the heated mirror I was talking about. Label them.

Because your rig is black, you might be able to get away with trying to color match it (spray paint). I have white, so it was going to be a massive pain to try that. Anyway, any body shop will paint it, just a question of how much they will charge you. Expect $150-200.

It's Shadow Mica, but the OEM mirrors are just black plastic. Thinking I could try satin black with some clear coat, or get bold and try to color match. For $200, I'll paint them myself

Color match? Yeah, sounds like your best option. The weather is so freekin nice (68 degrees) now, I may just finish the job today.

So that makes (me included) 3 members that are getting (will get) these mirrors. Cool, looks like I started a trend !:hat:

I was all in for the 5th gen mirrors until it looked like they wouldn't work, I definitely watnt to do this mod :frisky:

CookieRoe, Thanks for the MIRROR removal instructions. I hadn't even thought about that yet (but I should have, errrr) especially the heated mirror part! I meant to say how did you remove the MIRROR HOUSING? Should have been clearer.

I'm thinking about just painting them gloss black (maybe the appliance exopy?) & seeing how they come out. Maybe plasti-dip but I doubt it 'cuz they're always hitting branches.

You have to take the door panel off, there's 3 bolts under the little plastic cover and door panel, 1 wiring harness. Also there's a plate underneath that exposes the screws that hold the mirror on to the bracket if you want to disassemble further

Yes, this. You should take the whole thing off. I made the mistake of taking apart the assembly WHILE it was still attached to the car. Anyway, take the door panel off and those screws that hold the assembly onto the car. When it comes off, you HAVE to further dissemble it b/c you have "gut" it. Tedious, but not impossible.

FINALLY............ ok, onto the next mod......

so yeah, I threw my back out a few days ago and was pretty much worthless for anything. Fast forward to today:

I wasn't expecting to finish this honestly, just wanted to finish servicing my truck with filters (which my dealer screwed up by giving me the wrong ones) and new wipers. My older brother and I were over my parents for a visit and got bored. Realizing I had my tools in my parents garage...... we got to work!

I used this location to ground both of them (near driver's kick panel):


Got the driver's side hooked up.


Started to get dark, but I had my brother as my assistant so we plowed ahead. Fished over the wires from the passenger's side kick panel to where I had to tap into. Me starting to button things up and call it a night:

To give you a good idea on how they look outside & inside, made a video for those interested:


I know I took forever for this, but in the end I think it was worth it. Time will tell of course regarding the longevity of the LEDs. I'm hoping forever, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Finally getting off my arse to get these installed. Wanted to clarity a few points on the mirror removal.
Removing the door panel & mirror assembly itself was no problem. I misunderstood and thought that the mirror housing (the part we're replacing) just popped up off the bracket that is attached to the door. I'm sure if I pulled REALLY REALLY hard it would've popped off!

Once the whole mirror assembly is off, there is 1 small screw where the 3 studs are. Remove that and the whole back rubber & foam gasket will come off (you can see it off in the 2nd image). You'll have to remove the tape securing the existing harness through that rubber piece. 1st image
Next look in one of the crevices and note the tab. Push that down with a tool & a small cover can be removed from the bottom of the mirror bracket.2nd image
This will expose the 3 torx screws.3rd image
Remove them & there is 1 more underneath & 1 small screw through the mirror housing. Remove those. 4th image
Now you can remove the motor bracket from inside (3 screws). I then removed 3 more screws to remove the motor from its bracket. On the back of the motor are 4 wires with 2 connectors (2 wires each), a grey & a black. 5th image I removed the connectors then removed the wires from them (once the connectors are off it should be pretty clear how to pull the wires off). MAKE SURE YOU NOTE OR LABEL WHICH WIRE GOES WHERE. On mine was a brown & a red on one and the other had a purple & a red. I felt this was the easiest way to get the wires out of the motor bracket tube so I could swap to the new housing.
When I ran the new wires, I didn't try to fish them inside the small sleeve/loom for the existing wires. Instead, I used a length of 1/4" heatshrink for the 4 new wires.
You can now re-assemble everything. I would loosely attach the mirror to the door & ensure that it works properly.
As I think was stated above, I just tied the puddle lights into the wiring for the door panel light. Ensure proper polarity. You then just have to run the two wires for the directional the rest of the way through the door to the inside of the vehicle (or just the positive if you want to connect the ground from it to a ground wire in the door panel).

LOL, I'm sure glad I'm done with this.

Passenger side complete & working. Really not a hard job now that I know what to do. Fortunately I had previously run a right directional circuit wire over to the passenger side from the fuse panel area some other time I had the dash apart so it was an easy connection on the pass. side.
Now for the drivers side & that should be pretty quick I'd think.
The WORST part was trying to reattach the glass mirror!

Drivers side complete. Now that I know what to do, it to me 2:30 to do it. So far very happy with results. Puddle lights are plenty bright at night.

And AGAIN put the mirror itself back on SUCKS.

Looks great! Did you paint the mirrors, or have them painted by a shop?

While this looks like a massive PITA, I like how visible the signal is from the blind spot.

I painted them myself with Rustoleum Automotive gloss black. They came out fine.

Thanks man! Being the sacrificial lamb isn't so bad, it all turned out nice in the end. I was going to do a DIY, but I figure there is enough info here that can help anyone who wants to do this (no real need for a DIY). I took my time with this mod b/c I didn't really have several hours to begin and complete this project. Having a kid and not having a garage doesn't help either, LOL. But yeah, it had its moments (of bliss and aggravation).

I wouldn't waste your time on the 5th gen mirrors b/c they simply won't align up with the body. Add to that the added costs of getting them (even if you get aftermarket ones). These LEDs are brighter than the stock 5th gen mirrors and honestly think they look better (subjective).

Awesome work guys. I'm glad to see that some people actually went through with this and got everything working. This may be next on my list. It looks great and I like the idea of the added visibility.

I'm grabbing a 4th gen soon and am looking to do this. How are these holding up? Also do the puddle lights come on when the car is locked/unlocked, or just when the door opens?

Mine are still holding up just fine (knock on wood). Puddle lights only come on (the way I wired them) when the that particular door is opened. It was easier for me to wire this way rather than snake another wire through the wire loom (PITA).

EDIT: After looking at THESE pictures, it looks like I was wrong and that they would just bolt up to our factory mounts. The only thing would be swapping out the glass, painting and wiring up the lights.

It looks like the same ones HERE for only $126.
