DIY MOD: How to make under hood lighting.

my year doesnt have it. does yours? did any 4 runners have this?
Mine doesn't have light either. Been thinking about doing this and I might try to find a mercury switch versus the button/striker I was going to attempt to use.

well darn,mine dont have it either.. add that to the couple things
i dont like about my t4r.. this and no power to outlets when off.. gotta do that mod soon..

Years ago (87/88) I knew a guy with a first or second gen 4R that had a factory mounted trouble light on a spool in his truck. That was the truck that made me want a 4R. I'm guessing it was an option at the time.

Sorry to revive such an 'old' thread being a biologist I don't really deal with electricity much hence my little knowledge on the subject. So my question is why do we need an inline fuse holder? And the positive lead goes straight to the yellow connector on the fuse box?

You need a fuse for protection, in case something happens and it can stop the power flow.
Yes in my vehicle it goes to the yellow connector.

Okay so this is my understanding of your wiring set up for under the hood lighting. I have everything and I'll be doing tuesday afternoon hopefully. So cut one wire of the mercury switch attach ring terminal and screw it to the metal tab on the hood. The negative wire from LEDs to the other wire of the MS. The positive end of the LEDs down to the inline fuse holder and then to the power on the fuse box with another ring terminal. That's what I got out of your instructions hopefully its right :roll:.

Wow, luis, you really made this mod so simple. I managed to take up two posts, whole bunch of pictures, and 1.5 hours wording the post correctly. ... you break it down to 6 or 7 sentences!

This Mercury Switch is exactly what I needed for more light in the cargo area only when the hatch is open. Thanks for the direction.

I know this is an old thread, but I totally want to do this Mod...
First off, thanks to the OP for taking the time to share this.
A quick question, I've never used LED strips before. Is there a special connector required from the strip to the wire, or will a basic coupler work?

Old thread, new mod for you. It's all good lol.
These led strips are just 2 simple wires, a +/-
Just use the strip, twist together, solder, and tape method.
When you start your mods, always do it with the most care and reliable method. This will help in the longevity of the mod.
