Talking That_Titanium_4RNR Build Thread

Hey guys, so I'm pretty new to this site and when I first made an account was around the time that the hacking stuff was going on. I had made a build thread started then but it got erased unfortunately. Hopefully this time that doesn't happen lol.

So here goes....

Completed Mods

5th Gen Brake Swap-This one is super recent and obviously the most in depth so far. From the first day I bought this runner it has had AWFUL brakes. The front driver side caliper was stuck open and barely gave me any stopping force. Every time I hit the brakes it would pull my steering wheel hard to the right and in a highway situation this was quite dangerous. So obviously I wanted to get this done before most anything else (lift, tires, exhaust, etc.). After doing a bit of research here on the forum I decided that the 5th gen swap would not only fix my issue but also give me a bit more braking force than would have been afforded by just putting back on new 4th gen stuff. I originally had intentions of putting all new 5th gen stuff on, but after some issues with the rear rotors contacting my e-brake system, I decided that my 4th gen rotors were the way to go. Luckily, I am a parts hoarder and didn’t throw the old stuff away. And the old rear rotors were in good enough shape anyways that I didn’t care too much. So, after a few days of disassembly and fighting some rusted parts and loose e-brake pins I got the old stuff off. I got the new stuff in the next day and re-installed it all. I proceeded to bleed the brakes the day after and then put it back on wheels only to figure out the problem with the rear rotors. After I put the old rears back on all was solved though. I can’t tell you how happy I am with these new brakes though, definitely an improvement on what I had, but unfortunately since mine were in such disrepair I can’t give a really review on how these brakes perform against a normally operating 4th gen system. Unfortunately, since I was in such a rush to get everything back together and since funds are low I opted to not get them painted yet, and in a few weeks/months I will pull it all pack off to get powder coated. There is a really good shop near me and won’t take them long at all to get them cleaned up and coated.

Slyfox AIP Bypass-This was literally the first thing I did to the 4Runner and I am glad I had done some research on this issue before acquiring my new runner. I decided I was going to be preemptive and order this bypass the first weekend owning the runner. Funny enough, as soon as I received the package from the mail my CEL came on for this exact issue haha. This is just my luck. I followed all his directions and had it installed in no time at all. CEL was cleared and my mind was at ease…for a time. The next weekend I toke my dog out to the park for some running/longboarding and when I got back to my 4Runner it wouldn’t start. I figured it was a battery issue and thought by just cleaning the posts and re-installing them. Still no luck though…So my gf came and picked me up. A few hours later I returned with some tools ready to attack whatever the issue may be. I tried to start it up at that time and it turned over just like normal. I was utterly stumped. I took it to my mechanic for his opinion and it never gave him an issue (of course). He did mention that I had some bypass thingy that worried him, but I explained it to him and he re-installed it for me. I picked it up the next day. I think the issue was that the starter relay/fuse has not been fully seated when I first installed the bypass, because after his re-install of the bypass I have not had a single issue and it’s been months now.

TPMS Bypass-The light had been on since I bought it. I was notified by my shop at the same time of the bypass stuff that my sensor was bad on one corner. So me being the cheapskate that I am, I decided to look for a cheaper option. Plus I know when a tire needs air and I don’t need a light to tell me that. I picked up some scotchloks and fixed the issue in about 5 mins for 5$.

Future Mods/Already Bought Parts

Suspension

Front-I ended up purchasing some barely used (<5000 miles) 5100s with OME 885 springs already installed for about 250$. I plan on also getting a sway bar relocation bracket too. I will also be picking up some SPC UCAs to install at the same time. I have done plenty of research and know plenty of people running this UCA with nothing but good things to say about it.

Rear-I picked up some Icon 2” springs for $100 with less than 10,000 miles on them. They were also never off-roaded. The paint is in perfect condition and they look completely brand new. I was actually happy to get used rear springs because I hardly ever have additional weight in the rear and it probably would have taken forever for them to settle down if they were brand new and not broken in. I plan on picking up some Icon 56505 2.0 shocks within the next few weeks as well as extended bump stops. Eventually I could see myself getting new control arms upper/lower because my current ones are super rusty looking and are an eyesore.

Tires/Wheels

I picked up some 5th gen Trail Edition wheels (the black insert like painted ones) for $200 that are brand new with no scratches. I currently have some of the center caps for the gray version of this rim and I am looking for a cheap alternative to going through the dealership for these correctly colored caps. I have always really liked the look of stock rims from a newer model on an older model vehicle. I come from the Silverado world so maybe that’s why lol…plus the 18” limited rims I have are really badly pitted/peeling paint. They were painted at some point in the past and whoever did it did an awful job. But oh well, I really don’t like the look of them anyways. Plus I get an extra inch of tire by downsizing to the 17s.
For tires I am planning on getting 285/70r17 Cooper STT Pros. I have a very short commute to work so mpgs are negligible for me and I love getting as big of a tire as I can on a given suspension setup. Plus the STTs are my favorite looking tire for the 4th gens. I have bought/upsized/traded tires many times on past vehicles, but they were always used tires from people on Facebook or craigslist. This time I am planning on buying brand new from Discount Tire when they do that sale when you get 100$ off a purchase of 400$ or more. I really like the insurance they have on their tires and the store where I live has really great service too. Seems like a win-win to me.

However, I am planning on having to do a BMC. Not too worried about this though. I have all the tools needed and my buddy can weld too.

Armor

Skids-I live in NC and BudBuilt isn’t too far from me. When the time comes I think I will be getting their full 4 or 5 part package. My current ones have been abused my me in the short time I’ve owned this runner haha. I went on Flag Pole Knob Trail and absolutely thrashed my rear engine skid. Also multiple trips to the beach with no ground clearance and deep ruts has pretty much sanded them clean of any remaining paint so they look super rusty now.

Bumper-I am not big on adding front or rear bumpers on vehicles because I like the stealthy mod look and bumpers are typically a little too exaggerated for my taste. With all this being said, I absolutely love the hidden winch plates that I have seen a few companies make. I would even consider the C4 Lo-Pro bumper when I get ready to purchase that part of the build. Since I’m only going with 285/70r17s I think I can get away with keeping the stock spare tire location too. Which negates the need for a rear bumper for me honestly.

Sliders-Definitely going BudBuilt on this as well. I really like the kick out ones they have with the dimples facing down. I have already removed the stock steps because they kept getting my pants dirty and the runner looks like it has a slight lift just from the removal of them.

Exhaust

My exhaust manifolds were bad since day one (November 2018) with this thing. However I expected them to be so oh well. I am planning on running shorty Doug Thorleys. Will plan on shop welding in good aftermarket replacements (need to do more research on which to use). I will also get a price on a new custom y-pipe from them. Will also probably end up getting the Gibson set-up from Jason Burtman. Seems like a good value and I can always swap mufflers rather cheaply if I hate the sound. May end up going with a side exit. Haven't decided yet because I don't really like the look of it, but if it means I won't smell exhaust with the back window down anymore I am 100% ok with it. I am not even going to try and do this install. I can already tell it's way too in depth for me and I would break stuff and not know what to do.

This one is quite expensive for me and I will probably be saving up for awhile...

Accessories

I currently have a Dobinson’s awning installed on my stock rack. I like the sporty look it gives, and I go to the beach/tailgate a lot plus I got a smoking deal on it from a fellow Facebook 4Runner Group member. This group is where I got the springs, shocks and wheels mentioned above.
LEDs-I have a few LEDs so far, license plate lights and reverse lights. I plan on getting LEDs highs and lows soon along with putting some Baja Designs in my stock fog location. I may end up with some ditch light pods too but that’s not really all that high on my list.

If I get a Prinsu or Rocky Ridge roof rack I will end up getting a bar as well, but I won’t be adding one till then.

Repairs/Maintenance Items

Timing Belt-This is the next thing on my list and I believe I have everything I need for it as well. Aisin Kit, New Serp belt tensioner and pulley, new thermostat, tube of FIPG, Reman Denso Alternator, New Denso Radiator, one gallon of full concentrate Toyota antifreeze, and crankshaft seal (only doing this one if needed).

CV Axles-I have 2 OEM re-boot kits in my garage and during the time I am doing the lift I will be re-booting. Not looking forward to this messy job, but at least I’ll have the supposedly “best” cv axles.

Misc.

• During the re-boot process and lift I will be doing gear oil for the front

• I’ll also be doing the rear diff breather mod at some point before or shortly after the lift

• Window tint will probably be coming in the next few weeks if nothing breaks before-hand. I talked to the shop already and they said ~$350~ for the work I want done. Thinking 5% on the front 2 windows, with a 5% shield strip. Ill be adding tint to all the other windows too but I’m not sure how dark I should go, because I want to match the front to the back as close as possible and I know the backs are already factory tinted.

• My rust overall is pretty bad looking but not all that serious. During the lift I will be getting all the spots that are hard to reach with a wire wheel and painting them with something like POR-15 or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum (black). After the lift is over and whenever I have free time I will continue to attack areas every weekend with the wire wheel and paint. Over a few months I should have a brand new looking frame.

Finished Repairs

•AIP Bypass
•E-Brake Hardware fixed
•Temp display bulbs
•Shifter bulb
•Denso Iridium plugs IK20
•Deleted TPMS
•Serp Belt
•2 new keys
•2 new fobs
•Trans line replacement and top off
•Bank 2 Sensor 2 O2 Sensor
•Driver side mirror repainted using Duplicolor factory match rattle cans
•5th Gen brake upgrade (Akebono ASP pads, Centric Front and rear calipers, Centric front rotors, stock rear rotors)
•Brake fluid flush
•Power steering flush
•Front, center and rear diff drain and fill
•Rebooted OEM CV axles
•Timing Belt/Water Pump/T-stat
•Fan clutch
•Alternator
•Radiator
•Serp belt tensioner

I’m sure I’m missing some stuff but that’s what I have so far! Hope you guys follow along!

Unfortunately I had to travel few hours for ALL of the parts I got, but IMO it was well worth it. Also nothing is ever rusty down here too which makes the used parts market actually temping lol

Thanks man! Just trying to do things as money allows. I'm still in college and although this is my passion I have a ton of other stuff always going on too.

I wish I could just jump straight into the mods that I want to do, but I need to get a lot of those maintenance items taken care of before I put the fun stuff on. It would look pretty stupid if I had this sweet 4Runner all decked out with a lift, tires, etc. and then it was broken down on the side of the road lol

Nice build plans. I am planning to pick up a 4th gen in the next month or two and start my build. I am wondering how you like the awning so far. Have you by chance had it at the beach or another setting with high winds? I will mainly be taking mine to the beach and trying to figure out what awning to go with for that. Where I am at the wind can be steady at 20mph so just wondering what you think of it so far and if you would go with a different brand like ARB if you bought again.

So far so good! The only issue with it is getting it set up. If its a windy day there would be no way for me to do it by myself, but with a someone else helping its no big deal. Once its up it seems to be pretty sturdy. I also made sure to angle my 4runner to block most of the wind so it just floats over the top of the awning. I haven't even used the little spikes with lines to anchor it either.

Also I bought it used, I really didn't have any preference on brand it was just a good deal and I hopped on it. I didn't do any research on awnings beforehand, so I am not sure if ARB is better than Dobinsons or anything like that

Also I just ordered some SPC UCAs today from Battle Born Offroad. They were having a great sale and I wanted to have these UCAs on hand to install during my lift! All thats left is rear shocks, and possibly a sway bar relocation bracket! Haven't made my mind up whether I want to just ditch the sway bar altogether though. I've heard of plenty of people doing this, but I do a decent amount of highway driving so idk...

This past Friday I had the dealership do a brake fluid flush. They have a machine that does a great job. When I did my 5th gen swap I bled the brakes only enough to get the job done and kept recycling the fluid that was coming out back into the master cylinder. I knew I would eventually let the dealership do the 100% flush so I didn't care too much.

Yesterday I did a steering flush, steering definitely feels much better, and I have peace of mind again. The old fluid was darker than any used oil I have ever seen.

Next up I am doing the timing belt/water pump/radiator/alternator/serp belt tensioner/fan clutch.

After that I'll be doing a center and rear diff flush. For the front I'm waiting till the lift because I'll be removing CVs during that time and the old stuff will leak out anyways. No reason to put new stuff in the front and then have the new stuff leak out a few weeks later.

Not mine, but my gf's mom got new housings yesterday courtesy of me. She wanted the absolute cheapest ones available and I found this set on 1A Auto for $105 shipped. Install wasn't too bad other than that one really low bolt. They seem to very good quality, we should be able to tell whether they leak or not today. (imminent thunderstorms)

Just added some XenonPro led lows and highs today at lunch. 45w variant in white. Seem to be a very high quality light and all the seals on them were absolutely awesome. The fans are massive but also very quiet. I’ll take some pics tonight of the light output.

Edited to say-DO NOT BUY THE LOW BEAMS. They have terrible output in the projector housing. The highs are unbelievably bright though and put out enough light in the reflector housing to make it seem like you have a light bar on your roof.

I will be trying the Auxbeam lows that other have used once I get around to ordering them. The XenonPro Lows will be getting returned though.

Got the rear and center diff fluid change knocked out. Ended up using the Lucas Oil Synthetic 75w-90 fluid for both. Also picked up a set of crush washers/gaskets to service both axles and the center diff. So far there are no leaks and everything seemed identical to stock. I also noticed that the gear oil that came out seemed to be somewhat new still, this was surprising because nothing else on the vehicle has been maintained by the PO. No sign of water intrusion on the rear axle either. All good stuff.

The washer set can be found here

Finally happy with the headlight setup. Auxbeams in the lows and fogs, XenonPros in the highs.

Also finished up the mod allowing fogs to be always on, and for them to be on with high beams as well. When you turn all three sets of lights on at once, it is quite bright to say the least.
