Is the dealer feeding me a line regarding water pumps?

To my knowledge '03 and up engines use a timing chain and a serpentine belt to drive water pump, alternator, power steering etc. A properly tensioned serpentine belt should not wear the water pump shaft bearing. Inspect the belt for cracks and looseness. Replacing this belt is an easy job.
El-wrongo! At least regarding the timing BELT! I wish it had a chain!

So the pink stuff is the 100k miler? My red coolant says "Extra long life" - guess that just means 60k miles (which is what I think the book recommends between changes).

WTF from this thread I assume that there are three different types of coolants?

Red Long Life = 30,000 mile replacement schedule
Red Extra Long Life = 60,000
Pink Super Long Life = 100,000

V6 has a timing chain, V8 has a timing belt.

Yes, pink is 100K. The red is 30K miles.

"Pink" SLLC only comes in premixed 50/50 form.

"Red" LLC comes in concentrate and needs to be mixed, don't think "Red" LLC comes in premixed form.

Timing belt?

I am so sorry. I have a 2004 V6 and don't know anything about the V8. I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that I have no distributer and that the engine is completely under the control of the computer. I've been in the dark ages with a 1989 S10 Blazer and upgraded to this. How totally cool the new technology is.

Well, I don't know about all of this hoopla, but I changed everything when I had the timing belt changed over. That included water pump, hoses, belts, tensioners, pulleys, seals and thermostat. Most of this only costed parts, as the labor was eaten up just getting to the TB. As much as I drive, I'm not going to risk one of these things going out in the next 90K. I also have yet to change the fluid since I had this done, but apparently I need to take a look at this. I never changed it before, so I may not change it this time either. I'm currently sitting at 155K, so I'll probably have to change it all again around the first of the year anyways.

One note, make sure and tell toyota if you plan on changing any of the tensioners and pulleys! They don't keep these on stock, so your 4R will sit until they get them in. Of course, I told mine and they still didn't listen. :bash:

155,000 miles? What year? If it is a 4th gen it's good to know they will go 155,000 miles without major problems . I know that Toyotas made 10-15 years ago were bullet proof I just haven't owned a current Toyota more than a couple years but my 06 I hope to keep for a long time.

It's an '03.

It had better last a while, or I'm not going to finish the payments in time.
155k on an 03!!?? You got me doubled! Yer my hero! So how has it held up? I've had various electronic related issues, but the extended Platinum warranty has totally covered the over $5k in costs.

No major issues. Half of the fan speed controls don't work, and the clunking in the drivetrain is getting worse, but besides that I haven't had anything major go wrong (knock on wood). I've taken decent care of it, but could stand to do a little more. I still need to change my brake fluid, and replace my transfer and differential oil again, but up to date on everything else. I'll post up pics when I hit 200K.
