Hum - starts at 40 mph...then is there until it goes down to 25 mph...

All,

I have 12k miles on my 4runner now.

I do have spiderstrax spacers and 265 ko2s. 10k miles on the spacer...3k miles on the tires.

The hum seems to start around 40 mph....is not noticable above that speed...but will be noticable down to 25 mpg. The noise does not get louder depending speed...its the same sound at 25mph or 40...

Has anyone experienced this on a pretty new 4runner? I really think its a bearing...

You can eliminate one common 4Runner humming problem by engaging 4wd. If the humming goes away in 4wd at the same speeds, you have a needle bearing failure, driver's side. It's common and there is a TSB for it to be fixed under warranty.

well....I replaced the needle bearing with the ECGS bushing and the noise is still there.

It seems to start up when decelerating and then is a constant hum from 35 mph down to 25mph. More audible when cold.

wheel bearing? pinion bearing?

If I sway the car from right to left the noise remains the same...

56k miles on my 2015. I think I have this exact same thing at 40mph but in addition to the hum it feels like a vibration that sweeps from the pedals on the driverside to passenger side. Seems to happen every 8 seconds or so at 40mph. I replicated the issue with a technician from a local Toyota dealer last year but they had no fix for me. Tire rotation did nothing either.

I've been living with it but I still notice it when I drive steadily around 40mph. I don't hear it when I decelerate.

I have the same hum on 2007 4runner with almost 130k on it.

Might just be the tires. My KO2's put off a hum that gets worse as they wear. I have about 30k on my set now. It's my 3rd set of tires in 167k, first two were not KO2's and they did not hum. Just a thought. Good luck!

its not the tires for sure...did it with KO2 and ridge grapplers...

if it's only on deceleration and you've already ruled out the needle bearing, that sounds like pinion bearing to me. it's basically text book description of pinion bearing.

wouldn't hurt to check for play in the wheel bearings, that's an easy enough check to do

If I speed up to 40mph, let of the gas and come down to 35mph, that's when it starts. It will remain constant if I then apply throttle for a constant speed.

It's louder on cold days.

Does not happen when accelerating.

I have a 2015 TRD pro with 50k miles on it. Noticed a driver side dash rattle from 40mph to 60mph after airbag recall was done. May have been there before but never noticed it. Dealer said it was not from the dash but somewhere under the dash and they couldn't figure it out. The said it may be from the switch panel to the left of the steering wheel which vibrates at higher speeds. Not sure if that is the problem. I am still investigating at this time.
