is it me or do these BFG AT's suck in the snow?

seems like the Revo's on our 4th Gen do much better for winter driving. i wasn't really surprised on packed snow roads. but, even deeper snow, the Revo's seem better. maybe they are stickier because i would think the BFG's would dig better. maybe stickier is better than diggier?

it's not you. the BFGs don't have a good rep in snow.

Yeha, I'd like to get some opinions on tires in the snow... I was looking at the BFG's, as I've had good luck with them in previous installations.. But I was also looking at the General Grabbers, Discoverer ATRs, Yoko Geo ATS, as well as some other setups.

The Yoko Geo's that came on the limited wheel SUCK!

I just replaced my 20's with Silent Armors on FJ wheels today and if they perform as well as they look i'll be happy. I had BFG ALL-TERRAINS on a 1995 T-100 and was able to manuever through over 20 inches of snow on several occasions by using 4 low and a rear locker. There were few other vehicles driving around during that storm so I would say that the BFG's did well in the snow (on that vehicle).

Had about 29K miles on my Duelers before we got about 2" and I was sliding all over the place. Had cross terrains on my '03 and felt unstoppable.

Got a set of Dueler Alenzas and so far so good.

Its not you BFG A/T's suck in snow and pretty much everything else for that matter I had a set on my old 04 SR5 for about 4 months and sold them I prefer the Nitto Terra Grappler myself. I am running the BFG KM2's right now I will probably get Duratracs when these wear out in a year or 2 thats my .02's

ok, thanks for the replies. they seem to have a loyal following, that's why i was surprised at how bad they are. like i said the Revo's seem much better. but even more surprising, some of the mud terrain tires i've had before are better than the BFG AT's including Toyo's, Swamper SSR's, and even the BFG MT's that came on the JK Rubicon.

I run dedicated snow tires in the winter. I got a new set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R tires in December. They seem to be doing pretty well so far.

Aggressive ATs and MTs that are made to clean out very easily (for mud) tend to suck in snow. Snow is attracted to snow so when snow is stuck in your tires you get better traction. When its getting cleaned out like the BFG A/T is designed to do, you'll notice worse traction.

Same here...I spend 3 winters ice skating with those crappy stock tires not to mention that I have a 2wd...until I finally decided this winter to get new rubbers...Wanted really the Blizzacks but because you have to take them off as soon as the winter is over I went with the Firestone Destination AT's. Today I had my first opportunity to really test them on Ice and snow her in Indy a lot of places were close so are the schools etc etc because of the Ice storm....and OMG what a difference!...the sliding was very very minimal to nothing even though I have a 2wd. Off course I was taking the necessary precautions with the weather conditions of the roads. With the Duelers it didn't matter if I drove slow or carefully... they slide anyways and with the minimun ice or snow. KUDOS to the Firestone Destination Ats. And I am sooo glad I made that investment.:bravo:

Had Revo 2s on my Jeep, no complaints off road or in snow. Still an A/T.

Have Duratracs on now and they are great. A little louder than the Revos. Really aggressive for an A/T, and the mountain snowflake rating helps in the snow.

The compound makes a huge difference in the snow too, snow tires are much softer that's why they wear out fast when it's warm out and you drive on dry pavement.

BFG's are a snow rated tire, right? And the Revo is not. Maybe the problem is that you're comparing the 4th gen fulltime 4wd system to the part-time system on the 5th gen.

BTW, I'm not at all impressed with the Revos in snow. I don't think they are horrible, but I think they are average at best.

Ditto. I bought FJ steel wheels with Blizzaks. Doesn't get much better.

according to tirerack.com, select BFG ATs are not rated for snow; depends on the size. but in any case, snow rated or not, the BFGs have a lousy rep for snow traction.

the hakkapeliittas are unreal. i run a set of those on my wife's bimmer for the winter.

From TireRack's website:

"NOTE: While most BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements (and are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol), selected tires do not."

We are talking about the same tire, aren't we? I believe most all of the popular sizes for our 4Runners are snow rated.

we are. URL was supposed to link to the specs page (but didn't). the 275/70/17 and 285/70/17 are not snow rated... the stock 265/70/17 size is. :shrug:
