The test numbers I used was from comparison tests done first by Motor Trend in 2003 and the second by Car & Driver in 2005 (I listed it at the top of the tables).

The reason why I like using the comparison tests is that they test all the vehicles on the same surface, conditions, etc. This helps to minimize diffirences in conditions.

Besides every time you run a test there will be differences also there are slight differences between vehicles as well.

Sounds good that you guys are going for a test run, are you going to go for a 1/4 mile run? If so please run with spare, tools, ect in the vehicles and at least a half tank of gas. This will show more realistic results for everyday driving, rather than trying to take stuff out you drive with everyday.

I don't know where you got your numbers from but these numbers came from C & D. By the way I have found many discrepancies in their testing in the past so I would not believe anything they write.

I don't find the performance of the 5.7 Hemi Heep to be very impressive, especially off road. As soon I can I will personally put the performance difference between the Heep and 4Runner to bed. My buddy is on vacation and will be back in 06 and we will line up. A 15.5 sec quarter mile may not cut it!

Haha!!! I can't wait!!! I haven't had the chance to line up next to a Hemi GC yet, so I personally wouldn't know how they are in a heads up race.

What a revolution it would be if the 4Runner outperforms the jeep! Giving up 60 HP and 45 lb/ft of torque giving up a full liter of displacement!!

Should be interesting to find out how they do against each other.

Make sure to shoot some video because I would want to see this! I can't wait to hear the results.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but during my lunch time internet surfing I came across this plethora of false information called autos.com. The 0-60 times for the mid-size SUV segment particularily bother me:

http://www.autos.com/autos/rankings...segment=midsize_suvs&rank=acceleration&year=0

There is no way any of the SUV's ranked higher than the 4Runner can actually run the advertised times, and for some reason this really bothers me.

This seems like a legit site so they might as well use accurate information, right? Either that, or put a "Sponsored by GM" banner on the top of the page...

Also, I like how they rate the 4Runner 7th overall in the mid-size SUV segment behind the likes of the Exploder/Moutainqueer, TrailGazer, ToeRag, *Pile*ot. (Couldn't think of one for Murano someone help me out)

How about Morono??

guys before buying my runner i drove whatever suv i can get my hands on for at least a day just to feel the trucks out before making my desision speed and performance was a big factor
first off the " volksbomb, *Pile of shit and Muron" shouldnt even be considered in the same catorgory 2 are really cars (Pile of shit and Muron) and one sucks outright

the gx is pretty much the same truck if i had the dough i would get it but its slower and doesnt have the same handling u feel it

the hemi is fast i mean the thing felt fast i felt a difference but its a jeep no handling, hard ride

the explorer plese keep it i took it off the lot and drove it right in i'd rather walk

so my only desicion left was the runner and it should be every one else choice as well

just my two cents

I don't know what other members of this forum think, but I consider new car tests somehow irrelevant. How long a car stays "new"?
Com'on... you really want to know how a car performs... take it to road after it has some miles on it.

I would like to see a long term test of say the best 10 Mid size SUVs (pick them from the same list -when new- if you must). Take one of each when they are 2 years old and then again at 4 years old. Pick some with similar mileage and run the so called comparative tests again. Just forbid the use of new parts added in the middle of the test. Or put a max amount of $$ in repairs.

Then see how many conclude the test in one piece. How many needed the $$ to finish and how many should go to the trash can.

Add categories like:

Broken transmissions, faulty engines, loose steering, rattles, leaks, short circuits, emissions, engine noise and yes... market value (before and after the test).

Heck I don't think any of the Detroit big three would put any money on financing such test... why?

But then again... most of the people that buy the not so reliable cars have to sell them quick... thus such test may not be so important as the new car test.

That brings me to another point I would like to see.

How many owners per vehicle sold does a model have in 5 or 10 years. Think for a moment. Those models/brands with fewer owners show customer satisfaction and viceversa. Has anybody seen such numbers anywhere? I'd like a link if you have them.

I guess we kind of know what the results would be anyway... or we would not have bought the 4R.

Heck, my dad asked me not too long ago if it would be a good idea to sell his Toyota truck V6 89 4x4, now that has some miles and he feels is not as reliable as before... bought it new and now has 190 K miles and he is starting to worry!! I suggeted to buy another Toyota, but keep the old one.

You get what you pay... but if you buy a 4x4 toyota.. you get it for a longer time.

... sorry for the brain spasm!!

Or you are up against drivers that aren't trying that hard... an '03 3.5 Maxima would dust a 4runner in a quick second. Same with the S4. 328xi is a little slower than the others, but still... 4 car lengths? Sounds like the driver forgot to put it in gear.

I ran an '02 Maxima 5 spd. and I got a half length by about 40 and he caught up by 60. All I had at the time was exhaust.

Random street racing with strangers is in no way a true test of which vehicle is faster.
You don't know if the driver of the other vehicle: #1, knows how to drive, or, #2, if he's really going all out to race you or if he's just "pulling your chain".

When I'm driving my 911 in the summer, I constantly have guys at a stoplight next to me revving and grinnin'.Most times I ignore them or just wave. But sometimes I'll stomp it when the light changes, then back off and let them pass after a short distance. I often wonder how many of them are bragging to their buddies afterwards how they took down a Porsche.
Yeah, whatever.

I think it IS a decent test. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to tell if the person in the lane next to you is racing or not, and if he can't drive that's his problem...

Hey Outrnnr,
I love speed, acceleration, and beating other cars/drivers too.
But I do it on the track, not the street.

Excuse me for being an old fogy/school marm, but street racing is just plain stupid and iirresponsible.

It might seem cool for you to brag about all your "kills" on the street. But you are not proving anything about your hopped up vehicle or your own worth as a driver, by cruising around and drag racing with strangers at stoplights.

If you really want to show how fast you and your vehicle are, do it in a real test.
I'm sure that Denver has a very active SCCA that will welcome you to come and compete in their autocross or track events.

Try it out, and quit fooling yourself about your "kills" until you actually hurt or kill a real person with your stupiid, macho, driving.

I have to admit, I have a problem. I can't resist the urge to be quicker/faster then the vehicle next to me. It's like a bad drug habit. I seem to not have control over this. I can remember feeling this way ever since riding a three wheeled bicycle, as a kid. I'm not kidding, something takes over me. I have to take my motorcycle out every so often to satisfy this need. Every time I ride my motorcycle, I will go to a special place and make one pass that requires WOT of at least 2 or 3 gears (approx 150mph). I can then drive my car/truck for a couple days without having that need. It must be something like a speed junkie, I get a fix and I'm good for a while. It's sad but true. I feel the need, the need for SPEED!

'03 Maxima with a 3.5 with a 6 spd tranny was rated under 5 seconds for 0-60 (and yes, I can personally verify that they are that fast). '06 Runner with a V8 was (at best) 7.8 seconds in 0-60, which puts the runner almost 3 second behind. All of the numbers for an S4 I have seen put it squarely around 6 seconds for 0-60... Since the S4 was full of people and going uphill, I don't think they were really trying (I wouldn't drag with a car load of people).

Don't get me wrong... The V8 Runner is one of, if not, the fastest SUVs on the streets, bypassing most sedans and SUVs.

I used to like to drag on the street, but both parties agreed what the race was and the distance. Now it's just too dangerous unless you have a controlled area (no kids, no animals).

While I can appreciate your opinion, I must say I've heard (read) this lecture many times.

When people read about my "racing" stories I think they get the idea in their head that I'm in a neighborhood with a bunch of houses around and kids playing in the street or something, or that I do it when traffic is heavy. The only time I race, and I would hardly call it that because I never reach racing speeds, is when I am at a stoplight on a wide road (many of the roads around the Denver area are divided highways with 2 or 3 lanes on each side). If traffic is light and there isn't much directly off the road I floor it and usually I know if I'm ahead or not by the speed limit and let off, I don't see how that is so damn dangerous.

Short drags in a straight line is all I do, just like what Koz mentioned above, there is something in me that makes me want to be faster than the person in the next lane, if they have the same idea then its a race, if not then I don't continue to drive like a moron. You can't tell me that you haven't ever floored it from a stop to the speed limit, right? Well that really isn't that much different than what I do, believe it or not...

So until you know me and know how I drive and the circumstances I drive and/or "race" in, then let's dispense with the lecturing OK?

Isn't the new rav4 quicker in the 1/4 than the V8 Runners? I think it runs 14.8s and there's more than several SUVs that run 13s so the Runner in the 15s is really just quick for it's class and not really some 1/4 mile monster like some of you are making it out to be.
Even the new mega Escalade has run in the high 14s in the 1/4.

You want real #s then take it to the drag strip since comparing your truck to random drivers isn't showing you anything.
Post some real numbers and then we can talk since I've seen pretty much everything run at the strip.
