00 needs new cats... help?

I have the same damn problem with the p0420 code. It comes along with the P0120 code which is the TPS Sensor on my cali spec 99 4runner.

FYI I had a P1135 code too which is the front A/F sensor heater circuit and I changed it with a bosch sensor from amazon.com and now that code is gone. But I have also replaced the rear 02 sensor with a bosch sensor and I still get the P0420 and P0120 .....

I guess I'll change the TPS as well since its only $44 at partznet.

Or you could just move to Florida, and remove the cat if it goes bad. We do not have any emissions or any other auto inspections for that matter. I remember when I lived in New Jersey and you would have to go to the inspection center and sit in line for an hour to get your car or truck inspected. Or, you could go to a service station and pay for the inspection. When I moved to Florida - now 10 years ago - i was somewhat surprised that there are no auto inspections here. You also see a lot of old clunkers on our roads spewing forth stuff and leaving a trail of parts.

This subject came up when I was talking to my mechanic not long ago. I asked him what if the cat was bad. He said most folks just remove it at that point.

you would still need the 02 sim if u cut off both cats so the CEL stays off. otherwise u may get a code from somewhere else and u wouldn't know.

BTW where can we get the 02 sim ? I think that will be my next step instead of changing my cats since they cost so much. I think URDUSA is sold out ...

I had an 02 suburban last year, had to replace all 4 o2 sensors, but still had the codes (p0420 along with some others) about bad cats, so, I found a muffler shop here in Tulsa, had both cats replaced for $300 total, that included 2 cats and the labor to change them out. Well, codes stayed off for about a month, so I ended up selling the suburban....

My point is, if you check with some of the muffler shops in your area, you may find a place that can replace it pretty cheap, here they are $149 a piece....
