01 3.4l exhaust size from cat? looky, looky!!!

alright, im tired of searching w/o results.
im going to run a flowmaster 40 after the cat and dump it there.
my problem is i cant find the damn diameter of the tubing so i can get the proper adapter.

im thinking of running a 2.25 flowmaster so i can keep low end torque. im not to worried about losing top end.


\so my question is, what is the diamater of the stock tubing after the cat on an 01 v6?
please correct me if im wrong.

I'm pretty sure 2.25" is right. I think I got the 2.5" Vortex for mine, but the exhaust shop still got it welded on without a problem.

My buddy has a V6 Tundra with the 3400 engine, got a flowmaster 40 directly after the cat and a turndown right after. He says he LOVES the sound since the muffler basically sits under the back of the cab. Whenever I decide to get a muffler installed, I think I'll go the same route.

What's the point of dumping it under the 4runner? I think a nice chrome tip would look better than no muffler.

No, there is still a muffler, just no extra piping under the truck.

Well the converse is true too... what is the point of having a tip? It doesn't do anything besides look good. It's just a matter of opinion and preference.

I had a flowmaster 40 it sounded great for close to a year although there was a drone between 2000 and 3000 rpms. The exhaust did sound deep like a v8 at very low rpms especially start up. After a year the muffler tends to open up and it sounds like a beater without a muffler on at all. I currently did a custom magnaflow muffler with a resonator into a magnaflow muffler. It doesnt have the same rumble but at least is a little quieter, smoother and it is 100% stainless instead of galvanized steel.

In my opinion the 40 is too loud and drony for the 4runner but if you want loud go for it.

Also you may want to take a look at some specs because flowmaster's chambered technology reduces flow and therefore robs valuable power whereas magnaflows have a wide-open technology which is far better for increased airflow.

The stock 4Runner pipes are actually metric and the closest match is 2.375" outside diameter 2.25" inside diameter. The tailpipe flares out a little bit for the last 4 inches only. As long as you use stock pipes, the 2.25" or 2.5" muffler should be fine (no loss of low end torque). I put on a custom mandrel bent 2.5" outside diameter tail pipe on my 4Runner with a magnaflow and lost low end torque. I quickly changed back to stock.

Since the 4Runner's pipes are 2.375", I recommend the use of a 2.5" muffler and stock pipes.

well besides for the decon, everything went well.

exactly as you said a 2.50 fit perfectly over stock tubing.

some states require by law where the exhaust can exit. ie. after last passenger compartment, past rear axle, some dont allow side exhaust, i know here in n.j. a dump right after muffler wouldnt get thru inspec. & net ya a ticket. but it depends on state. personally, i dont think that 4 less feet of pipe after muffler will net net that much more or any low end torque , i mean the cat is still there. im sure the regs are different in the western states. i had a set up like that back in the 70s on an old vec that was self inspected, & had to be carefull when going thru mud pits. sorry, just my 2 c.

only have to worry about 2 inspections here. 1. smog, but thats through obd2.
2. initial state inspection if the vehicle is from another state.



btw, i ended up turning it down after the muffler right before the reae end.
