01 4Runner SR5 with factory fogs, switch on dash

Hey guys - just bought my first 4Runner - have had several Explorers, Trailblazers and Jeeps in the past. As the title suggests, this is an 01 SR5 that I bought from the original owner, in completely original condition. I have the original window sticker that states it came with fog lights as part of an option package, however the switch to activate the fog lights is on the dash, NOT on the headlight stalk like the manual states it should be. Everything else I've read seems to indicate that the switch in the knockout panel on the dash would be for something other than factory, but again - the original window sticker states it came with fogs. Anyone know what's going on here?

This came up because the lights don't work. I asked the owner about it, and he said he went to change the bulbs before but the housing/wiring was all corroded and he didn't want to mess with it. This didn't seem to be an owner that ever made any mods or anything like that. I'm going to try to get the covers off and see if I'm getting power to the socket and, if so, just put in some new bulbs, but in doing so I came across the discrepancies on the location of the switch - factory vs dealer or aftermarket.

Any light you guys can shed would be great - thanks!

There "should" be a switch to the left of the steering column just below your vent. Check the wires at the fog light itself. Make sure they aren't melted if the PO said they were corroded. Could have a short somewhere that you'll need to track down.

Thanks - I think that is what it looks like (don't recall off the top of my head), and I'll check for power there and the socket itself, but is that the 'factory' switch for an SR5, as opposed to the one on the stalk as mentioned in the manual? Don't know what I was thinking. The fog light switch in my 01 SR5 is on the stalk itself. Should look something like this.

See mine is NOT like that - it's definitely something more similar to the earlier pic on the dash - yet my window sticker says it came from the factory with fog lights.

Maybe the sticker was wrong, so the original dealership added them? Regardless, you should be able to get them working relatively easy. Make sure to get rid of any corroded fittings, and that you have power to the switch, and power on two of the switch poles when in the on position. If that checks out, and no power is getting to the lights, then its probably a bad relay

I had a 98 SR5 with factory installed fog lights. Didn't have anything on the stalk, but I did have the switch on the dashboard. Dunno if the year of the rig makes a difference or not.

On the 01 it is on the stalk. However, given that the turn signal switches go bad in these, maybe the PO replaced it with one from a non-fog light model and put a switch on the dash.

After doing some additional research, my fogs are Hella - hence the switch on the dash. They are listed as a $269.00 option on the original window sticker (Code LF), but I'm guessing that's a dealer or port installed option as it's an SR5.

So, after diagnosing the issue, I'm getting power to the fogs, but they are just completely rotted at the rear, which is extremely common on these too I've learned. However the brackets, though rusty, still seem solid. It seems that these 4Runner specific kits that people used to buy came with these brackets, but are no longer available. My next question is if I but any Hella Micro DE fog kit, like H13090611 from Amazon, will I be able to just simply remove those from the generic bracket and bolt them in to the bracket already in place in my SR5 with the dealer installed Hella fogs? The other option I guess would be to get some aftermarket replacement fog assemblies, but those have a different bracket all-together, so I'd have to remove my current bracket to that one in place.

Does anyone know if the generic kit H13090611 will work for me - unbolt from the generic bracket and bolt right in to the 4Runner specific bracket already in place? Thanks all in advance for your input!

Yes they'll work. I have generic Micro DE's and 4Runner specific ones,same lamp assemblies.

Thanks Ed - do you happen to remember what the model # was of the 'general' Hella kit that you used in your 'specific' 4Runner Hella mounts? The model number I found at Amazon is H13090611.

Unfortunately no,I bought both general and specific kits off ebay 2 years ago. I bought the general kit to replace the lights on my specific kit due to water damage.

I just had one of each light assembly (generic and specific) in my hands and they're the same. I highly suggest adding a hose to the "breather" port on the back rubber caps and use zip ties or hose clamps to tighten the seal between the light and cap.
