'02 4Runner Plugs - Driver's Side

I'm fit to be tied. The Driver's side spark plugs seem to have some kind of sleeve with a spring that won't allow me to engage the socket over the plug so I can turn out the plug. Does anyone know whats going on here. I've taken the rubber holder out of the socket and tried everything. I've never run into anything like this before. HELP PLEASE, the engine is running rough, gotta get the driver's side three changed.
