03 4runner Supercharger!!

Hi!

Hi guys...

I just to introduce myself... i just bought me self a V8 SC'd runner limited. I will be adding some tuning measuring devices like a wideband, EGT and intake temp. Since its a factory installed part i really think it will be reliable, but I'm also curious about the pinging and other issues.

I have 94 octane here so i will try with 91 92 and 94 to see . these are all considered premium and **should** not cause a problem. My background is turbochargers and subarus but also have a friend that is very familiar with the supra engine. I'm planning to keep everything stock as it will be my daily driver but just wanted to share whatever experiences i get.

Personally I think the SCer shouldn't be a problem since it is a TRD part and should be tested... i know there is a pinging problem with the STI when it first came out... but a reflash of the ECU made the tuning much better... I would think some of those pinging runners didn't have an ECU reflash or at least should have had one...

Thanks

by the way i will be asking for the dealer to do a compression and leak down test before they do anything... something anyone considering this should be doing...

compression test on a new runner?

dude, don't waster your money on a Comp test for a NEW limited runner, I would still wait about 5k to let the head gaskets to set in, but besides that, it's a waste of money since the engine hasn't been broken in yet. . .unless you've bought it used. . .

Re: Hi!

Welcome HOK!

Please tell us more about your 4 Runner. Is it 4x4? Did you install the S/C with the 4 Runner brand new, or after you've put some miles on it?

Also, BIFF, the only other member with a S/C attempted to post some times for his 0-60 with a stop watch - could you try and do the same and see how your times compare?

Thanks, and congrats on the 4 Runner!

Oh sorry i forgot to mention...
It is a demo with 7000 Kms on it. and was driven by the owner of the dealership. thats why i want to have the comp check. even though its not really required, its a good idea for forced induction i feel.

but yea i'm really excited about getting a reliable monster (if a little heavy).

any dyno runs yet??

I'm turbo charging my other ride, so the Runner will have to wait, but I know I'll be getting it from Eddie, his prices are great and great customer communication. . .

Dude-

So envious - you gotta do a time on the 0-60 mph for us!

Come on!

There is some major mis-information being posted about the S/C

The S/C is always running from RPM 1, since it obviously runs of the engine, if the engine is running so is the S/C. Your welcome to look under the hood if you dont believe me or my boost gauge. True boost increases with more throttle but it doesnt require 3/4th get it up try increased boost at idle and more from rpm 1 over idle.

Low end is not lost, it is gained in huge amounts of torque.
THe TRD for 03 V8 is highly tuned, there is no pinging, that was a V6 problem.

Gas mileage loss is negliable, I run a Yakima rack and large rocket box/roof top carrier and am still getting 15.9 all day long in town while taking advantage of the extra ponies. At the end of the year if I spent an extra $500 on gas because I got 1 mph per gallon less does it really matter, Weedo has the 2whl drive version no S/C and gets 17 mpg in the city, I really dont see any diff, when you factor in my non-aerodynamic junk and driving habits. Did I mention mine is all time 4wd too. All up all that and you would think the mileage would be significantly less, well for the last 16,000 miles I have had consistent mileage.

Speed, I run easy 7's 0-60 and ran 1/4 miles at the drag strip with 15.1 being my best, with 1/2 tank of gas, the rack and box on the roof, plus another 100lbs of junk in the box. BFG All Terrains dont help either on the weight category, but the thing still rips. Subaru WRX had slower times 60ft and 330 ft times but would get me by 3 tenths at the end.

TRD warranties everything is built specifically for the engine, how can you go wrong there.
I read many boards and always see alot of info put out by those who dont own a S/C, The S/C is the single best mod ever, there is nothing even close. People always do exhaust, but in reality it only adds 5-10hp.

I will add I ran the engine for 4k before adding the S/C and do run Mobil1 as I would anyway. Changing tranny fluid is no diff then if I drove hard without the S/C.
Siam, I know this is your board, but I would get the facts before throwing out heresay.

Hmmm. Interesting specs. 'Biff' ran 0-60 times of 5.9. You say you run 7 second range to 60mph. Doesn't a stock 4 Runner do that? Let me check...

So either that rack & box is REALLY slowing you down - or you need a new Supercharger!

He has actual 1/4 mile times, on a slip, from the track. His point about running "easy 7's" 0-60 is that it's much quicker than a stock 4 Runner with ZERO issues. No one can check an actual 0-60 time unless you have all the proper equipment like the car mag's do. (G-Tech's are ok, within a few tenths)

I have to admit, when I read the many posts out here about the supercharger, I got a real kick out of it. There are WAY too many posts from those that don't know much about superchargers. I would much rather see no post, or a post stating the things that are common facts, than the mis information posted out here. This isn't regarding everyone of course. The wrong information will easily sway someones decision. If I didn't know better, after reading the posts here, I would NEVER get a supercharger!

For those posting real, accurate information, thank you.

Anyway, back to the forum!

All my runs are unofficial , but I will say this I can defientely do better than seven seconds. Here is what I did

5 runs

2 runners V8 SE 4x2 one with a s/c

location: Deserted street, flat surface

after the fifth run my friends runner avg. 7.2 seconds, mine avg 5.9 seconds

When I have more time I'll go to a track and make it more official. In the mean time, I don't really care if people believe the times, I just wanted to share my experience with others since I was one of the first to have a s/c.

That's probably as close to correct as it could be! Road and Track got a 7.8 out of a 4x4, I would assume a 4x2, weighing ~250lbs less would be about .2 quicker. Possibly at .4 to both of your times.?.? Just a guestimate though!!

Are we not communicating here, or (not intending to be rude) is your math off? 7.2 as opposed to 5.9 is about 1.3 seconds difference. A HUGE DIFFERENCE in the world of performance. Biff's stats are consistent with the other guy with a 4x4 S/C TRD 4Runner that I recently posted.

Yours seem to be very slow in comparison, nearly one and a half seconds slower. That's like the difference between a corvette and a camry...

I think you missed something.... there has been NO accurate testing of 0-60 times. The only times tested, by a track, were the 1/4 mile times. He ran a 15.1 with a ton of extra weight. This would probably be a good 14.9 second truck without the rack, luggage, full tank, etc... So let's drop the 0-60 thing here. What were the other guys timeslips at the 1/4 mile? This way we can compare apples to apples and we'll find out how much quicker the supercharged T4R is than a stock T4R. Within the next month, we're both heading to the 1/4 mile track: me in the V8 4x2, him in the V8 S/C 4x4. Should be fun!

I'll repost the following link:

Check out this guys S/C 4 Runner & times FROM A TRACK

This guy has nearly identical times to Biff, 0-60 in 5.9, and he claims a believable corresponding 1/4 mile time of 14.1 - which if you compare other cars that accelerate to 60 in 5.9, have very low 14's for the 1/4 mile.

My whole discussion with you is that a STOCK 4Runner can do 0-60 in the 7's, and the 1/4 mile in the 15's. When you post similar times with a S/C - it tells me a few possibilities:

1 - he has a weak/bad engine or s/c
2 - the box on top & extra weight or tires are GREATLY diminishing the performance gains of the S/C
3 - some other factor is diminishing performance gains.

I imagine he's imagining he's getting more out of his exhaust & intake than the 15hp you're getting from your borlas.

I personally doubt that exhaust & intake together amount to much more than 10-15 hp...

I'm thinking 10 from my Borla, and 2 from my TRD filter. Still an est. with the 118 the TRD says you're suppose to get, and the stock 235 the V8 pulls.

235+10+2+118= 365 Ponies
