03 4runner trade in value...

i was in a process of buying a brand new 06 subaru legacy 2.5GT today for $25,500 and trade in my 03 4runner 4x4 sr5. They gave me a great price on the legacy but only offered me 17k for my 4runner. That is a bad trade in value right? at First they said 16k. i went banana!! When he said that.... I told the dealer, i would have to think about it.

You guys think i should do it? or keep the trunk?

You should always know what your car is worth before walking into the car dealership!!

Go to Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com) and Kelley Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com). Edmunds tends to be high and KBB low, so an average of the two is a good number to work with.

You should also look at how similar cars are priced on used car lots in your area. Visit Web sites for some local dealers and see if you can find comparable models. Your trade-in value will probably be about $2000 less than asking price on a lot. (The dealer needs room to haggle and still make money.)

Both Edmunds and KBB can tell you what invoice price is on the new car, so you should have an idea of whether or not you're getting a good deal there.

Dealers often try to mix a good price on a new car with a low-ball price on the trade-in. They make more money that way, and they make it seem like it's your fault you're not getting a better deal!! "We're willing to deal on the new car, but your car just isn't worth anything."

Don't be afraid to walk away and find another dealer if you can't get a good price on both the new car and the trade-in. Someone out there wants to sell you a car today - it just might not be the dealer you're at, though.

Mileage matters a lot. Plus, a dealer isn't going to give you anything for your mods and you have quite a few. As far as they are concerned it's something that can fail that's not easily fixed via dealer parts departments. With your truck, most likely they'll consider them a liability and wholesale it rather than sell it themselves.

On a final note, I don't think 17K is all that bad for a '03 SR5, especially in todays market. Edmunds shows the trade in value at about 16 K for one in typical condition with the usual options.

i only have 29,500 mileage on my 03 4runner. which is pretty low. i would think. My truck is in Perfect condition.

i checked edmunds....it says 20k for trade in and 23k private.

i was planning to part out my truck before trade in. the dealer knew that. I'll shop around. no rush. maybe ill wait after snowboarding season.

Why would you want to do that trade ? what are the benefits ?

I don't know your situation but I personally would keep the 4R. You have it set up nice and it barely broken in .....lol

Oh one more thing ....its a truck !! not a car

Amen to that! trading in a 30k truck when u brought it new is insane unless u got alot of mula!

besides why would u want a subaru? they're for little old ladies who live in vermont! lololol....

i'm 50/50 w. trading in my 4runner after going to the subaru dealer. "for little old ladies"? maybe back in the days...but now...they are fast cars...the legacy GT is a 2.5 liter turbo. same motor as the STI.

I have a friend that has one and it as pretty nice except a little small inside for my tast and unfortunately it also gets about the same gas mileage as the 4Runner.

DON'T DO IT!!!

I traded an 05 Legacy GT Limited wagon for the 4Runner. I've owned two Subaru's in the past and they were fine, but the new body style Legacy's are JUNK! The car was super fast, but rattled like crazy, took premium, terrible gas mileage, the list goes on and on. I only had the car for a year and couldn't wait to get rid of it.

If you must buy a Subaru, get the Impreza. It's still made in Japan. It will be faster too, since it's smaller, and is a little less weight.

Or even better, find a closeout deal on the Saabaru.

i really don't see why u want a sabaru if it drinks as much gas as suvs. u get less space and it's a car/wagon. the interior's not slick like the maximas. my max with traction control and snow tires is as good as all wheel drives "on" the road.

Very true, another gripe I had was the cheapo interior. The sticker price on my car was 34k. If you compare the interior to other cars in that range, heck, even the accord, you will be very sad.

In the city I would get 17-19mpg, if I stayed out of the boost. That was very hard to do, the car was fast, and zero wind noise. Highway mileage was 26 to 28.

Oh, I forgot to mention I got three tickets in less than a year.

impreza is way to small for me. I'm a pretty big guy. I know like 5 friends that have a saabaru 92x. They all bought it when GM was having a big friends and family discount. I was thinking about the 06 legacy gt wagon because they have a $3700 rebate.

Wow, $3700., that's a big discount! I'm sure a lot of the problems I had with my car have resolved with later 06 models. I purchased the car in Indianapolis when I lived there, literally less than 50 miles from the plant. It was one of the first Legacy's made. I know better, and usually don't buy first model year cars. But my Outback was on its last leg and I needed something. I'll admit, the power of that car pulled me in like a kid in a candy store. Good luck, keep us posted on what you end with.

How about the Audi A4 or the Volvo v50 T5? Just throwing some suggestions out there. Those would be top on my list. I love AWD sport wagons.
