03 4runner unintentional acceleration with weathertech floor liner

So, I definitely passed on the pedal recall last week at the dealer. The next day I got my weathertech floor liners shipped from an ebay retailer and installed them. The driver side liner even with the hook had a bit of wiggle room. While on the highway I floored the gas pedal and for a few scary seconds the pedal got stuck.

I was able to jar it loose and then remembered I could just put the vehicle in neutral. Luckily, I was able to switch lanes before hitting someone. I was able to replicate the same experience in a controlled environment.

I've tried and tried again on mine (03 with weathertech's, removed factory mats) and can never get anything like that. I'd like to know exactly what you're doing to reproduce it.

Do you have floor mats under the liners? Mine don't come close to the pedal. Post a picture of the clearance.

No floor mats underneath the floor liner.

Are you sure its the floor mat? Supposedly part of the problem is that the pedal design allows for some mechanical friction to cause it to stick and/or release slowly...

Though, the 4Runners are equipped with Denso pedals and not CTS and I personally have not seen either stick in such a manner yet.

I have an '03 V8 Limited. I've had the weathertech floor liners for several years. I've got no idea how you could have gotten the floor liner to hit the gas pedal.

I love my weathertechs and there is no way I'm letting Toyota butcher my gas pedal -- it is a bad solution to a non-existent problem.

^^^ agree with the above, I'm pretty sure that it's the pedal itself, not the floor liners. Lke Ark said, I've tried time and time again to replicate this and never had the issue. I have an 03 and have had the floor liners for over 6 months

Yea, I'm pretty sure its the floor liners + the poor design of the pedal. I believe it has to do with slamming on the gas and the floor liners sliding just enough to catch the pedal.

I have had Weathertech liners for over three years and mine have never slipped. I agree that the problem may well have to do with the floor mats slipping the wrong way at the wrong time.

Sitting with the engine off, can you make the pedal stick buy pressing the pedal to the floor? Check to see if it is catching somewhere.

Does your pedal go all the way to the floor or is there some clearance still? You may need to adjust the linkage.

From the pic it looks like your mats may not lay flat to the carpet. You can try trimming the mat where the pedal contacts so there is more clearance.

Not a good situation. If you can remember to shift to neutral in that situation, you'll also over rev the engine. Better than slamming into someone or something though.

My 2c is to trim the mats or chuck um. btw I have Weathertech too. No issue, but that's me.

I have to agree, it's user error. In the technical world many people call with computer problems but they are user errors, not the computer, we laff our butts off about them!!!
I had unintentional acceleration, once in my old Jeep another in an old Mazda 323, totally user error on both.
I suggest purchasing velcro-1 or 2 and putting it under you WT mats near the front where it will not allow the pedal and mat to hit each other. OR you could do the YOTA dealer PEDAL CHOP:violin:

It isn't the weathertechs...

this is a pic of my left foot flooring the gas ( car was off ), there was a little delay in rebound when I let off. But as you can see, it's no where near the Mat.

This is at rest.

Check your linkage... you could have a frayed throttle cable or something else hanging up it up.

Seems like a LOT of people are in denial and on the conspiracy theory bandwagon. Its pretty clear that they screwed up. Big deal! Fix it, learn, and move on. It's still an amazing truck that we all love. Or am I way off base?

I haven't gone into get the recall done but I should. I've had the same issue except with the old all weather mats not the weathertechs...I've been able to reach down and slide the mat back without hitting anything luckily...But it's definitely stuck on me a couple time. I know that I'm able to deal with it but not sure my wife can as it's her daily driver. All I'm saying is that only one hook of mine is hooked and it slides constantly. Mine are serious safetly hazards (again not the weathertechs as I can't comment on those) but why is the pedal soo close to the floor anyways? I love my runner but there are a few things that are annoying. While I agree it is totally the floormat and I'm aware of the recall it was just bad pedal placement plain and simple.

I've put 100,000+ miles on my 4Runner. I've never had any problems with the floor mats. That's not "denial"; that's the truth.
