The wifes 2003 4Runner developed a whine in the rear end. It doesn't change under accel/deaccel, only with speed, so I don't think it's the ring and pinion themselves. It's a fast sound like it's on the pinion side though (3.5:1 or whatever the axle ratio is), not axle. Is there a common failure mode in the rear end on that generation of 4Runner?

I had the same issue. I was hoping it was due to the tires cupping, had them rotated and inflated to a higher psi, but noise was still there. The whining/whirling noise appears above 30 mph for me. Had it checked out and it was both wheel bearings in the rear had gone bad.

Still a good call on the tires... worth checking.
I had that happen on some passenger car tires not too long ago and it can get noisy.

I'm going through the same issue right now. The best thing I can recommend is getting a ChassisEAR to help locate the source of the whine. I took my rig out for a spin today and was able to narrow the source of the whine down to the rear end of the transfer case.
