04-06 air bag recall just announced

In the news this a.m.—

DETROIT -- Toyota is recalling about 320,000 trucks and SUVs because the roof-mounted air bags can inflate without a crash.

The recall covers the 2005 and 2006 Toyota Tundra and Sequoia, the 2003 through 2006 Land Cruiser, and the 2004 through 2006 4-Runner. Also included are the 2003 through 2006 Lexus LX 470 and the 2004 through 2006 GX 470.

The company says improper programming in the air bag control computer caused the problem, which could increase the risk of driver and passenger injuries.

Dealers will replace the computer at no cost to owners. Owners will be notified by letter about when they can bring their trucks in for repairs.

That is what they did to me! I took mine in to get the new dash. I was hopping mad, they about had to call security. I asked the service manager and writer what did they not understand about not being authorized to do anything else to my truck. Then I asked why would I want this done if it hasn’t been done in four or five years.
They also filled my washer, I us RainX, they use cheapest crap they can and checked my brake pads (without removing my wheels because I had the lock)… the report said my rear pads need replaced.
Make them put it writing that they aren’t authorized to do anything that isn’t on the list and make them print it out. My mistake by assuming what the tech writer typed into the computer was what I said.

The recall the OP is talking about will be G0C when the repair is available.

As of right now, it is G1C as it is an interim notice that the problem has been officially filed and a repair is in the works. I'll keep an eye on it and make a thread for you guys when it's ready to go.

Thanks, I was obviously too lazy to research the BST recall . . .Do you think we can have success saying "Only do the G0C recall, skip the BST and 90L?"

Nothing inherently wrong with the recalls as they do what they are intended to do. But the issue is that what they do may not be beneficial for some of us.

For example, the 90L "Pedal Chop" cuts the accelerator pedal down by about a good inch or so, not everyone is happy with that. Sure you could opt for a new pedal if you don't like how the cut-up pedal looks, but the new ones are pre-made shorter; so same issue.

BST isn't a bad thing either, but it does create an issue where trying to power brake may not work reliably or at all but limited situations. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that once you get the BST recall done, there's no "back-flashing" meaning if you're not happy with the anti-Unintended Acceleration feature; you're SOL.

These two Recalls in particular are only there to "fix" the issue of unintended acceleration. The 90L pedal cut shortens the gas pedal so layered floor mats, and/or debris can't pin the pedal down. The BST makes it almost impossible for the throttle to run away, both "fixes" are more or less a response of the huge PR nightmare that was Toyota's UAI deal a few years ago.

OK..Thanks for the explanation. Just purchased an 06, so not sure if the recalls have been accomplished or not. Maybe safer for the wife if I make sure they have been accomplished. I don't see it affecting my driving style. Anyway; thanks for the info..

Never heard of a Roof Mounted Air-Bag! Only the 1 in the Steering Wheel and the Passenger side Dash above the Glove compartment...

I checked my VIN Lookup Safety Recalls & Service Campaigns by VIN and got nothing on my 04 SR5

04 Sport v6. I don't have it listed yet. I'm not sure I even have curtain air bags in mine. I do have the BST listed though.

Not to sidetrack too badly, but what ever happened with the cracked dashboard recall? Do I have to bring that up for them to do something?

I received a notice from Toyota about the dash. Maybe 4 months back. I'm the third owner did not buy from a dealer. But had one service done about 2 years back at a dealership. My dash is fine though. I'd check with Toyota a this point if you have the issue and haven't heard from them yet.

Got it. I'm second owner and haven't had service done by Toyota yet, so that might be why. Thought I do have an online account with them that has the VIN and all my info, but oh well. Thanks!
