'04 4Runner Sunroof problem

Is this sunroof problem with all Toyota's, or is it just the 4runner? My wife just got a Rav4 Limited and it has a sunroof.
The sunroof is a problem only on the 4Runner.

I too would like to know. As I am about to make a deal on a new 07 in the next day or two I would be curious if this is still an issue.

Anyone have a link for the TSB mentioned earlier?

Anybody know what years are affected? Was it something that was fixed after a certain year?
Nope - it's a known problem on all 4th generation models. The service director at the dealership says the 4Runner is the only vehicle that has sunroof problems.

Update

Yesterday, I receive a call, saying that they would not be able to offer any assistance. I told them I would be there to get my vehicle and I expected a call back from the corporate headquarters, where I had called the day before and had not had a response. I got some arrogant a**, who basically when I asked him what he would do in this position, stated that he would never try to fight a loosing battle. He also made some half a** attempt to explain a TSB, which I refuted and he could not offer a response. Today, I drove my car and it rattled the whole time. I am going to inundate them with emails and phone calls, but they obviously don't care and refuse to stand behind their product. No more Toyota's for me. I'll take the honesty of my GM dealership any over this b.s.

Is your problem the rattle or jam

If your problem is the rattle there is a different TSB for that. Do you have the actual TSB? I can email it to you. The reason I ask is that all it does is apply some felt tape to add resistance to the metal parts to keep them fram making contact. The dealership should be able to preform it rather quickly.

I have been in your position before with Toyota on my Cruiser, similar situation different part, basic answer was not a positive one.

Note, if the sunroof is jammed, then you are looking at considerable work as they are going to have to totally tear into it.

It's interesting to note that Toyota's reason for the problem is that the grease that is used in the sunroof will harden over time, thus causing the roof to eventually jam due to one side pulling farther up than the other.

When you read the TSB, there is always a note to the dealer as to how this work should be charged out, everyone I have read makes mention of the 3 year 36 month warranty covering the work in question and if the truck is outside that time then it's up to the dealer as to how they want to cover the work, ie. gratis or charge.

Let me know if would like the TSB.

Rattle

My problem is the rattle itself, it still opens and closes fine. I do have a fear that it will not close if I open it, thought. They gave me a copy of the TSB, when I picked it up yesterday. According to them, my sunroof is loose and the whole mechanism needs to be replaced.

Sunroof TSB

I am new to the forum and have traded a Honda Ridgeline to go back to a 4 Runner. Could not be happier. One thing that I noticed different about the T4R forum is that they do not have any links or lists for the TSB's. In the Ridgeline forum they have a list. Just a suggestion. Maybe I have not found the correct subject heading. I have a little concern about the sunroof TSB. As of today I do not have a problem as the truck is only 3 weeks old but am wondering if there really is a problem should I print the TSB and take it to the dealer for correction?

Repair

So, I took my 4Runner to a sunroof repair shop, yesterday. I told them what Toyota told me and they laughed. They quoted me a price of $100 to fix the rattle, I kept asking them if they were serious because I couldn't believe it. They said they could not think of anything to even add up to the $2,500 dealer quote. I picked it up yesterday afternoon, and it sound perfect.

That's great!

Did they tell you what they did to fix it?

Basically the glass was loose, I could push up with it with my han dand it would stop rattling. I think they mainly raised the glass up, they said it was to low in the fitting and retightened it- my wife picked it up and she didn't get all the details.

If anyone with the TSB could email it to me, I'd be most appreciative.

address is bernse at yahoo dot com

Thanks! :)

TSB for Sunroof

In another forum I posted a reply about having a link to all TSB's for the 4 Runner even if only for the 4th Generations. On other forums I belong to for other MFG's they have a link to the list. Again, just a suggestion to help everyone out.

I would also like a copy of the TSB.

Thanks for the help!

This may have been answered but in the following years 05 - 07 have the 4R's had similar sunroof problems?. What IS the cause per the TSB?
