04 V-6 > Has anyone "had" to replace their exhaust system???

Yes I know some wanted to and did, but has anyone had their original exhaust fail??? Just cracked 136k and it appears to be just fine.

We have a stainless steel exhaust system, so it should last a loooooong time. I believe it's 304 stainless too. Good stuff for sure.

Yes, most of the major companies use 304 SS.

Well, I was getting some pretty nasty noises coming from underneath and noticed a loss of power. Took it in to have it checked out today. The muffler and centre pipe need replacing on the exhaust - at least it wasn't the drive train - it sounded pretty hideous.. Best part of C$800 taxes and labour in - ouch. I am beginning to like my 4th Gen 4Runner just a little less recently... it was built on April 1 - no kidding.

I am at 153,000km so roughly 95,000 miles - lots of salt up here - I am going to ask to take a look at what comes off. The dealer was pretty shocked as well. If it wasn't literally about to fall off I would have ordered a Borla system online for not much more grrr..

I put a SS Borla on my old Explorer when we first got it. It was still in perfect condition 15 years later when we traded it for the T4R 4 weeks ago. It survived through 12 CT winters with all the junk they use on the roads.

Now that is prophetic. First the good news. I took a look at the parts that came off and they looked practically new - no corrosion except some surface rust in one spot where the muffler bends down to join the tailpipe section. So folks should take comfort that their exhaust is not going to rust off.

Now the bad news - the pipe coming out of the muffler leading to the tailpipe had sheared at the muffler itself. No way could they weld it because there was just too little material to work with. What I think may have caused it dates back quite some time. Not long after I got the Runner in 2004 I managed to reverse into our other car - slow speed impact but what it did do was knock the tailpipe off its mounting. I suspect that little impact weakened the join on the muffler where the pipe comes out and the metal is thinnest and eventually it gave way.

So firstly - to anyone who says an accident won't come back to bite you later even when it's all repaired - think again. And to those who might have been driving with the tailpipe hanging down off the rubber hanger from a bump when offroading - hook it back up quick before you weaken that join and end up with a new exhaust down the line,.
