04 V6: How often should the serpentine belt be changed???

Every 90K, yes it is fairly simple if you are mechanically inclined
There's no recommended replacement interval that I could find anywhere from Toyota. That said, inspect it and replace it when it shows signs of wear. if you see cracks on the inside (the ribs), go ahead and replace it.
To remove the belt, you only need to release the spring tension on the pulley tensioner and you can slip the belt right off. Piece of cake...

Agreed. I always figured that the climate you are in can contribute to the life of the belt. I've gotten over 110k off of one. If and when you do replace it take the time to replace the belt tensioner pulley bearing. It's only 6 or 7 bucks and is good PM. The thing will seize eventually. The tentioner assembly is $90 and a PITA to replace. The pulley bearing takes 10 mins.

I would say you are running on borrowed time as the risk of it breaking when you are far from home would add to the cost. I tend to change belts and similar parts a little early if the risk of breaking while on a hunting trip in the mountains will cause a problem. Nothing wourse than spending a couple days under the hood instead of hunting or ..... when you are far from home.

I actually changed mine when I hit 30K miles. I was doing the plugs and air filter, so I figured I'd just buy a new belt and install it too. The old belt was in great condition, so I keep in in the storage area in the cargo area just in case I'm ever on the road and need another belt for any reason.

THe belt on the 03 i have is making squeeks when warming up. I inspected it this morning, there are some small cracks on the ribs. I'll get it changed ASAP.
Its going in for the 90k maint., so it looks like im pulling the trigger on it sooner rather than later.

Here is a DIY I created on changing the belt for a V6. Shouldn't take more than 10 mins, belt cost $35-$40.

07 4Runner 4.0 v-6 Serpentine belt replacement
My first time changing serpentine belt on my 2007 4runner limited 4x4, it has 74500 miles (mostly hi-way miles). Toyota dealer quoted me around $200+ parts and labor. I purchased the belt from ebay store for $17.26 (Bando 7pk-2120). I was bit hesitant doing it because never done it before but, after watching several you tube videos, I felt confident to do it. It took me about 25minutes start to finish and extremely happy with the results. (old belt showed no sign of damage but, just wanted to be safe before a long trip and kept :lookout:the old one for spare) Now I would encourage every 4runner owners to tackle this and save about $200...Good luck.

Tensioner seems fine, Im not really sure how i could tell if its bad anyway. I was looking at other aftermarket belts IE goodyear gatorback and Continental has a similar belt. but what I am reading makes me think twice... should i try a new belt or stay with the Toyota belt??? Thanks fellas.

When I changed mine I used the Gatorback belt but then read bad things about it and went and bought OEM.
The trick is to buy the belt for the Tacoma 1grfe, almost half the price for the same belt. The price difference has to do with parts sourcing... I assume. No problems 30K later.
After I replaced my power steering pump, the belt was squealing like crazy. At first I thought I bought a bad pump, but it turned out the belt was one rib off center from the water pump. Doesn’t hurt to check that the belt is aligned over all the accessories before you go buy a new one!
