'05 Amp install and speaker replacement

I recently installed a new Alpine PDX5 and Rockford Fosgate speakers. I already had a JVC Double Din head unit that really needed an amp and after market speakers. Two people with the right tools did the install in about 4 hours.

The large rubber groumet at the firewall near the batter is a perfect and easy spot to run 4g Hot wire. The line will drop right in the lower left of the drivers area. It will damn near hide itself behind the kick plate. Just cut a real small hole and feed the wire through.

Run the line through the center console. Its too easy. There is so much room in a 4runner you can run a half dozen lines if you like. I also ran the remote wire and RCAs through this area too. The speaker leads for the front and rear came up this area and attached to the factory harness behind the head unit. The sub lead was run to the cargo area under the carpet and then along the lower trim moulding and under the rear seat.

The best spot for mounting the Alpine PDX is under the passenger seat. What ever amp you choose hopefully it will fit under the seat. I hate exposed equipment. The seat comes out easy. Only four bolts. Make sure you discconect the car battery and at this stage the connectors under the passenger seat.

There is plenty of room and openings under the carpet too. You can easily hide all of your wires without making any lumps in the floor. I recommend using short wire runs. Just long enough to get the lines where you need them. This will also lessen the amount of hiding you have to do. For the groung I removed paint from a spot under the center console and screwed down a peice of 4g black ground wire. Keep your ground as short as possible too. You can see the ground spot in the picture as well. Just near wear the hot wire goes under the carpet. Where ever you ground make sure you use short screws and don't drill into the floor for one. There is too much padding there.

I secured the amp to the floor to make sure it stayed low. Its a great fit and doesn't run the seat once installed. The seat moves great and you can reach the amps controls. I show the amp here with the faceplate removed to show how easy you can get to the controls.

I installed Dynamat Xtreme on the door panels. I have plenty of it, but I hate to waste this stuff. I cover about 40% of the door panel using small cut sections of Dynamat. I mainly keep the larger flat areas covered and don't spend too much time or waste Dynamat on areas that have bolts and attachments. Typically only flat areas resonate. Any bolted or curved area is much stiffer and less likely to resonate. Focus around the speaker and behind the speaker on the outer door panel. I continue to cut peices and lay them on until I feel the door is dense. If you are going to spend the money on Dynamat spring for a Dynamat roller to do a good job installing it. Don't waste time and money.

I continue to Dynamat the rest of the door. I tap and thump on the door as I apply it to make sure I'm getting all of the important areas. Some pieces are as small as 2 inchs and others as large as 10"x5". Pieces this size make application and coverage easier. What I don't show is before the door panels were put back on I covered the doors in peal-n-stick Ensolite. Dynamat will only deaden but the Ensolite blocks sound, mainly the sounds that come from road noise. We all know how much noise you can hear riding down the highway. If you use this stuff in enough places your 4runner will be Lexus quiet. Now your speakers don't have to compete with the road and tire noise.

In case you didn't know you will need speaker mounting plates for all of your speakers. 6x9 in front with tweeters up top, and 6 1/2 speakers in the back. Here I show the tweeter adapters. Be prepared to adjust the size of you adapters. I had to dremel out the openings a bit for a good fit. Then I used crazy glue gel and a little bead of putty around the back side (like plumbers putty) to hold them in tight.

The set up looks awesome! I've wanted to put an amp in myself in my 05 Limited, but don't like the amp, etc. laying out - just like you. It looks great under the seat and is nice and hidden.
I'm not sure how many amps will actually fit under the passenger seat without rubbing the bottom! I'll definitely need to look into that.

I like the idea you mentioned of the Densolite sp? on the doors/panels. I hate highway noise, especially when trying to talk on the phone or listen to music. how expensive is that stuff?

its easier to route the power wire on the pass side firewall grommet when u are installing the amp that side, u need more dynamat inside and outside the door :), its gona make a big difference.

I thought about it but, passing it on the driver's side, closest to the battery, was pretty easy too. I like not having the wire running around to the opposite side of the engine compartment. No need to loop it or tie it out of the way. It was a much shorter run too, about 3 feet less.

I've done the over kill dynamat in my competition van in the past, but that had much more powerful stuff and it cost a fortune in Dynamat. It was so not worth it. Now I'm using 40 watt continuous Rockfords in the door. Spending $100 per door in dynamat won't change a thing for my 4runner. Maybe if I was using more powerful speakers, but I still don't agree with using more than 25% deadener. Most experts will agree, unless they work for Dynamat. It doesn't take more than 25% on the surface to deaden sheet metal and any area riveted, bent, or bolted resonates significantly less. Anyone readers concerned should read reviews like Sound Deadener Showdown - Your Source for Sound Deadening Products and Information. The next important step is to stop outside noise, deadener only stops metal surfaces from resonating. Ensolite or some other type of auto foam is needed for that. These are not my opinions, its science.

I contacted the Ensolite rep directly and got a sweet deal. I don't want you to quote me on the price but I paid less than 100 for enough to door all doors including the back liftgate. I plan to order more to foam the side pillars and roof. Just doing the doors made a big diff. I just wish it worked on glass because the doors are so quiet I can hear the wind outside the glass.

My amp doesn't touch but I would not have gotten two under that seat.

I'm going to look for the reps email and PM it to you.

i just dont like how that power wire runs over the parking brake cables, i thought u got some space under the driver side, if u decide to add window module, that hump is a good place to hide the modules. what power wire is it, look like a stinger or knukonceptz. i did my dynamat the easy way, i bought the mega bulk pack off ebay, and the sheets were large, it was easy to cover the door, but needs to be cut smaller for the inner for easier install. man u got me think if i should add some foam over it.

Its Stinger 4g wire. I got a crap load of dynamat extreme pretty cheap too. I had enought to layer all the doors including the rear lift-gate. If I had a competition car I would have used more, but about 25-30% of the doors was good enough for me. They sound solid now, no rattles. I used the rest in my 2door car. The foam is awesome. I read that the foam basically makes the difference in the interior sound of the 4runner compared to the lexus. The foam can be layered for better results and you should cover as much as possible. It makes a difference in just everyday driving with or without the music playing.
