Ok 1st problem with our new 4runner . Opened up the moonroof and let it slid all the way back and CRUNCHY !!!!!!!! Now its all the way back and wont move an inch . Being its underwarrenty we brought it to the dealer . They took out the motor and it still wouldnt move (they did this to see if the cable that moves it came off) So to cut to the chase its in pieces and they need to keep it 3 days (ATLEAST) to be able to replace THE WHOLE THING !!!!!!! It had acted funny 2 other times . 1 time it went back part way and stopped . It wouldnt move again till we shut off the truck and turned it back on . Just put it down to chance and being it never happened again never gave it a second thought . They checked all the wiring and it was fine . Going to get the whole story about when we can ( in real time :0) expect to be able to get our truck ! So if anyone else has heard this id like to know the results .

Sorry to hear about your problem with the moonroof, but I haven't had any problems myself. Even tho one of my buddy opened it up when it was all iced over. I did hear some crunching, but it was ice, and it still works fine. Good luck with the fix.

The worst part is that they will have your vehicle for at least three days. I hope you got a decent loaner, I would be VERY ripped if the dealership needed my truck for 3 days.
Aside from that, the majority of the moonroof problems experienced by other 4th gen owners has been the moonroof rattle. Toyota issued a TSB on this and a parts kit for fixing it. Since having my '03 repaired, the moonroof has been fine. Do a search of the forum for moonroof/sunroof problems, and you'll see. Few owners have had catastrophic random failures.
My guess is the '04 and '05 's already have the anti-rattle kit installed. Your problem is worse!! Good luck. Keep us posted.

When I went for a test drive of the 4Runner, the salesman was showing off all the features of the truck and he tried to open the sunroof (slide it back) with the white sheet of plastic still over it.
The noise the sunroof made was not good. He must have felt like an idiot, especially after hitting the button again. He probably figured the sunroof would tear free of the plastic, but it didn't. I told him that I've seen an open sunroof before, so there was no need to destroy this one.... and no, I didn't buy that 4Runner

other '04's reported here with crunching
There have been other 4Runner owners here with '04 and '03 models that reported the crunching sound followed by a non-functional sunroof. Here is one:

I think there were a few models with bad tracks which causes a grinding noise when it opens or closes. Since the sunroof also has the anti-pinch feature, if it detects any major resistance to closing, it won't close.
Hopefully the dealer will fix this.

Yes the dealership is going to wind up keeping this atleast 2 and a half days and they KINDA offered a loaner (more of a suggestion from the mechanic rather than an offer from the parts guy ! If i were my ususal self i would be up someones ass for a loaner on them and would probably get it . But seein as the weather here is near 70's and sunny me and the wife have just taken a couple rides on the bike . Status on the truck is they do not have a clue why it broke and have ordered everything BUT the center colum the unit mounts too . They said the column would have to come from Japan and would take atleast 2 weeks !!!!! Parts are suppose to arrive by end of today and be installed and ready for home by tomoorow . Have heard that before just too many times . BUt we will see . Ya never know . MOses did part the sea ........didnt he ? :O)

The moonroof is the most problematic part on my car. It rattled (I got it fixed), my switch got stuck once, it looses its auto function quite frequently, I hear crunching and cracking noises once in a while, the seals don't look like they're attached very well (no leaks yet) and the wind deflector flops around a lot when the roof is open. But, I still love having it.

Just as an FYI this no loaner thing is CRAP! My girlfriend gets one every time she ask when her 10 year old Acura CL goes in for service. She asks if they will need it over night, if they say yes she asks when she should schedule it so she gets a loaner, the give her a date and she gets her loaner. Every time!

It is rare to find a Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Ford (the list goes on and on) dealer that offers free service loaners though.

Well at $43,900 sticker from Toytota I expect more. Volkswagon, Honda and Nissan by me will all give loaner cars. You have to plan ahead and ask but they will. The fact that Acura does it on a 10 year old car taht was under $30k when new says allot.

well its all baqck together and supposedly working . We dont know yet cause we figured if they were gonna keep it this long they might as well give her an oil change rotate the tires and detail inside and out . (149.00 for detailing whew ) So when we went to get it the carpeting wqas still wet and they had a few MINOR things left to do and begged us to pick it up in the morning . So we decided to let them . This truck better look newer than new did when their done or its a size 101/2 up someones backside . Still no loner offered only a rental for 35.00 bucks a day . I must be getting older and soft cause a couple of years ago i woulda bounced off of pluto for them to keep my vehicle for a little more than 3 days . No i am not on prozac either . Prolly the wifes fault . mellowing me out .

My dealer will give you a loaner if:
1. you are having the 30 or 60K service
2. you have warranty work that keeps the vehicle overnight
That is why my dealer always returns my rig with 'could not duplicate' scratched on the work order. If it will take more than 4 hours to fix, they can't find a problem.

If we are all having problems like this with dealers we should be writing the regional service manager about our problems. A little hint, do not write and mention this board, other boards or the internet. They HATE that and it will automatically dislike you. Just be honest about what happened and you expectations. It is the only way we can help them give use better service.

Toyota is not known as a luxury brand, but Lexus is.... If you have Honda or Nissan dealers by you who offer free loaner cars, then that is because those individual dealers chose to those loaner cars. Most Honda and Nissan dealers across the country do not offer loaners, just like most Toyota dealers.
For what it's worth, there are two Toyota dealerships in my area that do offer loaner cars. But they have a small fleet of loaners, so you usually have to schedule your appointment weeks in advance if you hope to get one....

Hitman hit the nail on the head, no pun intended. The dealers by me have them but only a very few. So you have to schedule accordingly, ask for them and be patient about when you take your car in.
