05 VVTi V8 motor surging

When I take my foot off gas pedal to slow down engine rpms drop down to 800 to 1000. Then with foot still off gas pedal the rpms surge to 1500 to 1600. Makes vehicle very unpleasant to drive. As a result always end up putting 4runner into neutral as try and stop, since in gear it feels like it's being 'pushed' by the motor.
My dealer (Ira Toyota/DAnvers,MA) says it is caused by A/C. However, I experience same thing whether A/C is on or off.
Never had this type problem with 3 prior landcruisers or 1 prior 4runner.
Anyone else experiencing this unwanted
motor surging? Any solutions?

Take it back to the dealer turn off the airconditioning and tell them to fix it. If they don't want to help call Toyota and complain.

Got a similar problem with my 05 v-8. Brought it in and they finally ackowledged that there was indeed a surging problem (with or without ac on, it would gain and lose 4-5 mph after getting to at least 45 mph). The service manager himself drove it overnight and said it did surge as I told them, but after speaking to other techs. at a conference, they came to the conclusion that it was a power to weight ratio problem that could not be fixed. I told him that that was a crock of bull crap as I drove 2 other runners at another dealership with the same engine and they didn't surge. He said that there wasn't a problem if that was part of the design. Can you believe that crap. Taking it back down for a 2nd and 3rd time to get it documented before turning it over to an attorney.

Thats strange, i have noticed mine do it with the ac on but never with it off. Sounds like some other problem. Good luck with your dealer.

Surge

My 05 V8 surges mostly at idle, ranges from 500-800. Have to keep the foot solidly on the brake or you may have contact! Definitely not like any other car I have driven. Dealer blamed it on the AC - "normal". I say crock as well. My car produces the dreaded rotten egg stink. Overall I am less than thrilled with my vehicle.

Maybe a faulty throttle position sensor? The early LC 100's have had faulty TPS's (mostly causing the vehicle not to move once at idle at a stoplight).

Does anyone understand the drive-by-wire, in any detail? I realize that no throttle cable. I know there is a gas pedal sensor. Does that sensor send a signal to a motor which moves the butterfly in the Intake? And then the TSP measures the angle of the butterfly? Is there any technical info on this, other than a sales/marketing description?
