Vehicle in Question:
06 V8 Limited 4wd, ~95k, OME lift, 1.25" spidertrax, 275/65R18 Cooper STT

I have around 50k on the lift/spacers/tires and do a lot of daily highway driving. Most of my driving is in the "foothills" of NC, and around a week or two ago I was going up fairly steep mountain which I travel up once a month or so. I was running late and nailed it up the mountain. Heavy braking & full acceleration out of the many turns.

Once I made it up to the town at the top the transmission starting acting clunky and was taking a little longer between gears. It was acting up again on the way back home. Next morning I barely made it to my account on a 45min trip. Literally turned on my hazard lights when merging onto the interstate since it wouldn't get up to speed. Dash was then lit up with check engine/ VSC/ etc.

From a dead stop it would barely get moving. I would have to slowly get up to speed for each gear, lift off the throttle and wait around 10 secs for it to catch the next gear. Limped it to a dealership about 30mins from home and had them check it out.

I told them I needed my belts done, a few items for the 90k service I hadn't already complete, and to check out the trans. They came back and said they needed to replace the whole trans.

THANKFULLY I purchased the 100k warranty from Shaun a year or so ago and had less than 5k before that expired. They covered the entire transmission and my rental car for a week.

After checking out and picking up my keys, the service guy said he wanted to talk with me. He said that if I would have went to the wrong dealer or even talked to the wrong service writer there, they would have probably denied the warranty coverage because of the lift. He owned a lifted Tacoma himself. His opinion was that the lift/ tires certainly cause more drag on the trans, even more so since the t4r is always in 4wd, but he said there is no way of really knowing exactly how much of that could be attributed to my trans going out.

Toyota Warranty from Shaun was $700, total for the transmission and rental car was around $3800 if a I remember right. In my own experience, it was obviously very much worth it!

So... what are some of your opinions on the effect of a lift/spacers/tires on t4r transmission?

I'm sorry to hear you had an issue. Just curious, did you change the fluid in the trans ever?

IMHO it sucks that dealers claim minor lifts and minor tire upgrades as an issue. I contend that a 4Runner that runs with the extra drag of 32" or 33" and a lift works no harder than a stock 4Runner purchased by a landscaper that pulls a 2500lb trailer EVERYDAY. A 4Runner should be able to handle that. I know a 3rd gen could do it without cooking itself. With that said I agree that a lift and larger tires do make the vehicle work harder but IMHO it should be well within design margins for a vehicle of this type. With your lift and tires I might back my max tow load down to V6 ratings but there's no excuse for your trans crapping out. That's my take.

Here my response from the 120 site...food for thought...

Did he say what actually happened. Was it a freak accident or did some part go bad prematurely due to increased strain.

Im going to say it was freak because the A750F is the exact same trans in the land cruiser which people have run for 100k+ without issues in a car that not only weights 1k more but with armor/lift/tires etc etc.

With 30k fluid changes:whip2: Didn't you mention the note in the LC's maint schedule?
