'07 Bass - Annoyingly Loud?

Ever since I bought my 4r in Nov, the bass is extremely high/loud/whatever. Mind you, this is a 20 yr old male who likes rap who is saying this. At this point, I have the bass set to -3 when listening to most songs and -5 when listening to rap stations. Even on -5, there is a significant bass kick. Once past 0 though, the bass does not get louder, the quality just decreases. Is this happening to anyone else? On -3, it sounds like I have it turned up to +3 or so.

Just a thought, but maybe the ASL (automatic sound level) is on. I'm relatively certain that the default setting in on for ASL. I have the JBL 6 CD system and to access this setting on my radio push the tuning knob then rotate it until ASL (or whatever the initials are called) then change the setting so the the ASL is off. Hopefully that will help.

I don't think it is the ASL level. According to the owners manual the ASL just increases the volume as your speed increases. It shouldn't increase just the bass.

But yes, I have noticed that the bass is very high on this stereo. It was the first thing I noticed when I started messing around with the settings. I think it is just the way Toyota EQ's their stereos. My girlfriend has a Highlander and it's the same thing. I have the treble at 4 or 5 and the bass at -1.

I've also noticed the Toyota stereos are very "mid scooped". I hate not being able to control the mids in the EQ settings. I'm a guitar player and like rock/metal music. The guitars and a lot of the vocals get cut out of the mix on my stereo. I was going to try changing the bass to -4 or -5 and the treble at -1 in order to try to "boost" the mids.

I had the Infiniti Gold in my Jeep GC which kicked ass but that was the upgraded stereo over the stock one. Maybe the JBL Synthesis in the 4R is better than the stock stereo but I can't say for certain.

One note: I have the basic stereo that the '07 comes with.

And my ASL is on Low, but I don't think thats the issue. I will try it next time.

Hmmm... I find the bass lacking on my JBL system in the 4Runner and it has a sub, whereas the JBL system in my Camry without a sub, I have the bass turned down to -3 and treble up. But it seems the 4Runner's JBL is a tad more clear than the Camry's.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. I switched over from an '04 with the JBL 6 disc system and now I have the same thing in an '07 and my bass is also set in the negative numbers. I've also noticed my '07 has much more sound at lower levels. I used to keep my stereo volume in the 30's and now I seem to stay around 15 or so with plenty to spare. I reckon that's a good thing?

I had this same experience, and I've found that messing with the ASL setting on my basic model stereo definitely affects the bass level.

the 4th Gen 4Runners use all 6X9" speakers, which are pretty beefy..and have a decent sized woofer.

Everyone has different tastes in what sounds "right" or "good" sometimes, a little critiquing of the treble / bass / etc is needed.

If you find that you cant quite get it right, try getting an after market head unit with a good EQ that you can set it where you like.
