0w-20

Brought my 2003 v8 to the dealer and had them put synthetic into it for the first time. I checked the level a day later and it seems a little low (hard to tell with the dip stick) and i was going to top off with some 5w-30 i had laying around. I just check my paper work and yota put in 0w-20. What the hell is that? Have never heard of it. Btw engine bay is less noisy now.

You're not going to like my answer: If your 4runner is high miles I'd do a short oil change right after going to synth. Reason is the synth is going to break up and carry any oil debris back into suspension.

As to being half a quart low, all I can say is I do a 5 quart fill at oil changes, after living with it and tracking usage, it doesn't need topping between changes.

Our 05 GX went in for an oil change yesterday and the dealer put synthetic 0w-20 in it as well. Not sure how long they've been doing it, but it doesn't seem to be an isolated incident.

There are numerous discussions on these forums on if you should run 0W-20 and why Toyota has gone to 0W-20 in it's newer vehicles and switching to it in the older ones as well, read up and then make your own decision if you wish to do so as well.

When I bought mine a few weeks ago the paperwork from the dealer shows they put in 0w-20 as well. I have driven about 600 mile on it so far and I have not had any issues yet. Im not sure if it was a typo or if they actually put it in. Is it good to run these motors on a thinner oil than originally specified? I did buy some mobil 1 HM synthetic and a M1 filter to do an oil change just so I know exactly what is in my engine. I just haven't had time to get to it yet.

0W-20 is fine. This grade meets the same standards that 5W-30 does, but will also perform at an even lower temperature. It has a slightly lower viscosity, which will improve longevity since it can wash away contaminates faster and will thicken less at cold temps.
You only need to be concerned about using oil with higher numbers than what is recommended. Replace those at the next interval if possible.

FYI - I use 5w-30 here, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic (made from Natural Gas base stock...99.5% clean).

This time of year it's not a big deal IMHO. Next oil change specify 5w-20 or 5w-30.


BUT! It's not ok according to TSB EG018-06 which authorizes 5w-20 for 2006 and later. It also talks about 0w-20 only on certain engines, not ours. Get them to write that it won't void your warranty

Maybe there's a newer TSB that makes it ok, I don't know.

Generally with higher mileage Fords they recommend running a lower viscosity oil. 0w-20 isn't going to hurt these trucks, and may actually be better.
