0W20 synthetic oil interval

With my truck out of the "free" Toyota maintenance i've started looking more closely into my scheduled maintenance.

I noticed that Toyota recommends an oil change every 5K miles. That seems to be a bit of a short interval for full synthetic oil. [MENTION=99235]Scott@Hightech[/MENTION], [MENTION=68685]Ducmonsta[/MENTION], what do you guys think?

The attached is three pages from my 2010 WARRANTY & MAINTENANCE GUIDE.

Looks to me like 10K is acceptable with normal use and 0W-20 oil.

Toyota recommends that full synthetic 0W20 be changed every 10k. For 0w20 Dino oil it's every 5k. Our trucks ship with synthetic, ToyotaCare only covers two oil changes in our trucks.

Personally I use 0W20 Mobil1 with a TRD filter and change it every 4k. Overkill, probably but that's just the way I want to do it.

My recollection is that the 0W-20/10K miles was published after the first 2010 4Runners were on the road. The 2010 WARRANTY & MAINTENANCE GUIDE I quoted has a print date of "1/10" for whatever that's worth.

AHAHAH... I just used the same site for a 2012 4Runner and it mentions the 10K interval for oil changes. I had it pulled for 2010 first. Looks like I'll be updating my maintenance spreadsheet with 2012 data instead.

IMO use 0w20 and change it every 5k. Just because its synthetic doesn't men it doesnt get dirty. Your oil filters are no different either. Synthetic oil provides better protection that lasts longer. But thats not saying conventional oil would last the same time. In my vehicles(except the bmws) ive always run plain oil and changed it every 5k.

Changing every 5k also makes it easy with tire rotations. LOF and rotate @ 5k,10k,15k etc... I never have to question when my oil change is due or when i rotated my tires last

^^Same here. I know it says 10k, but I only put about that much on my truck every year. I just feel more comfortable changing it every 5k. One oil change a year for me just doesn't sit right.
