1/9/19 - Toyota Expands Takata Air Bag Safety Recall : 2010-2016 4Runners

Jeesh,, mine is still in the shop for repairing the damage they did to my touch screen on the head unit. Replacing the airbag alone was a 2 day adventure,, had to get parts apparently. Then to repair the head unit they need the truck for a couple of weeks as they have to send in the HU for refurb. At least they gave me a loaner SR5 to tool around in until mine is done.

This whole ordeal has been a great reminder why I don't go to the dealership for any work. It's impossible to get an answer on when the car might be ready with the unanswered phone calls, unreturned voicemails, and generally shitty people you have to deal with. I'm calling for an estimate on when it'll be done, not looking to argue with someone over whether or not they said 2 hours or 2 hours and 5 minutes, it's been 3.5 and I want an update.

Had mine done today in Cincinnati. Air Bag + Transmission Fluid Service took 4 hours from drop off. Also, reading a lot about different service levels based on the dealership. Call around if you can. First dealership I called last week said it'd take 3-4 weeks to get the part and that they don't offer loaner, scheduled me for Feb 25th. Called the dealer on the other side of town and they got the the part and installed it within a week of my call, and gave me a loaner. They told me this recall work does qualify for Toyota loaner car.

Got mine done this week, and it took about 3 hours. Dropped it off in the AM, picked it up during lunch. They even help me tuck in the wires for my dashcam which I sloppily did in a hurry..

I tried to get a loaner car but the service adviser told me that Toyota does not allow that on recall work...Luckily they offer free shuttle service and dropped off/picked me up at my house (wife was working all day).

By the law, they are required to provide transportation for warranty and recall work. It can be either shuttle, loaner or rental.

For you folks that have had the recall performed...did you receive a letter indicating that your vehicle was ready for the recall?

I ask because I have a 2015 in the mid-atlantic region and according to the map with the regions that would get attention first I'm in the area slated for 2019 but haven't gotten any notice yet.

Basically wondering if I need a letter for the recall or if I can have them work on it to get it over with already.

I'm in NJ and did not get a letter. I checked my vin number against the link in the first post and then called my dealership. They checked my vin and said yeah it needs the fix and scheduled the appointment. I'd get it done as soon as you can. just my opinion.

Read the first post, you can check your VIN online.

Got the recall done today on my 2015 in Tulsa OK. Loaner car was provided by the dealership and repair took roughly 3 hours. Everything appears tight and right.

Sorry for that. In my hurry while glancing through the forum at work I ignored the first post because I thought it was one of the earlier posts about the airbags from 2015. Now I see you had started this thread this month and it was a new heading and everything.

Good information! Much appreciated!

My service advisor is an idiot then. He originally told me my 4Runner didn't have the recall and it wasn't until another advisor told him he was looking up a 2012 Tacoma instead did he realize his mistake. Guess I have to find another dealership whenever I need to use them again. They didn't even give me an inspection sheet after they did my oil change, while my wife gets one every time on her RAV4 (might just start changing my own oil now)

I knew there was going to be a recall, but learned about it starting via this thread, the first post had the information I used. Got it done a few days later.

I think there will be a letter sent out, when I called the number, they asked how I learned about it and asked if I received the letter.

I didn't wait for the letter. I just called the dealer to see if they had them in which they did. I just wanted to get it over and done with. The dealer checked it on there end and said to bring it on in and I scheduled an appointment.

I had mine done today. Happy to report that so far I have not noticed any sign of dash misalignment / rattles. So far so good. XM radio was briefly confused and thought I didn't have a subscription, but it figured itself out after a minute and seems to be working normal now. Probably just something to do with it being 'reset'.

Curious why so many different time frames getting it replaced.
Something else I'm wondering about and I have not seen it mentioned is how many reports of the passenger airbag deploying normally, no schrapnel. Alot I would think in the 8 to 9 year span since the 2010 screw ups.
Not trying to make light of the seriousness of a faulty bag deployment but nationwide since 2010 wouldn't there be at least a million 4 runners across the country? (just a guess)
The NHTSA reports 23 deaths and 300 injuries. I think I stay up to date with the news more than the average Joe and never see a report on a faulty airbag injury or death from one. Google will find one but def not a regular occurence.
I'll be getting mine changed when it's available to do so. I just dread the process and the possible issues. I have little faith in any dealer.
EDIT: Just called the dealer, next Monday is my day. Said about 4 hours, passenger side of dash comes apart. Praying for a no rattle or otherwise F'd-up job.
I'll report back as to how it went.

Total sales of 5th gens through 2018 looks to be about 750,000

I'm going to schedule my appointment in about 2 weeks, as I'm busy with work. Also, it gives me time to have some faith that the techs will learn how to replace the airbags more efficiently as they keep doing these recalls.

I had mine done over 18 months ago, so they should be pretty good at them by now, plus they've been doing them on other Toyota models as well.

This is so damn frustrating to see over and over again. Can Toyota really not handle a recall without causing further damage?

This was a dealer, not Toyota itself. Not to pick on you, but do you get everything in your job done perfectly every time? I'm guessing you have an error rate of some sort, as do all of us, so we shouldn't be surprised at the occasional issue on car repair. The key is whether the dealer accepts responsibility and fixes the issue.

This was about the tenth report of a dealer screwing up the replacement I have read on this forum alone. Not even close to an isolated incident, so let's not make it out to be. My company doesn't have a parent company, so if we screwed up that bad, we'd go out of business. Our word of mouth reputation is everything, and it's very, very good, because we do exceptional work. In the case of dealerships, if they keep screwing up, Toyota should step in and make sure they can do their jobs properly. Or better yet, not install faulty air bags in the first place.

10 minor correctable problems out of the number of recalls they are doing, or even just the number of successful recalls I've seen posted between here and facebook, hardly seems like that big of a deal to me. It's an issue with your dealership if they give you a hard time about making it right, but otherwise it seems like a weird thing to be upset about.

Toyota knowingly installs faulty airbags, kills people, then dealerships all over the country cause further damage (as evidenced by this very thread) while replacing the airbags, and it seems like a weird thing to be upset about to you?

That's weird to me. I guess the world is full of different types of people.
