115V AC Benefits

Just like to say how glad I am that I had the 115V AC converter. Tuesday night we had to take my daughter to the ER with croup [like an asthma attack]. I was able to plug in her nebulizer and give her treatments with saline while in route which made all the difference. She continued to improve as we gave her the treatment. It seems like a feature that you never will use or only for things like playstation, etc., but it can really make a difference. Just another reason I am glad I had the 4-Runner.

Also, if you live in St. Louis and you were passed by a white 4-Runner going 90+mph on the highway on Tuesday night, that was me. Sorry about that !

That's awesome to hear of such a great use for it. I've still only used it to charge my camera and cell phone. Hope your daughter is feeling better.

I have the Coleman 800/1600 watt inverter and used it to power our refrigerator and a few house lights during a recent ice storm outage. I also hooked it in so we could run the gas log fireplace to keep the house warm. Worked real well and was a lot cheaper than a portable gas generator that I may never use.

For those of us who don't have the built-in inverter, portable models are available inexpensively at discount. Some plug in to a cigarette lighter socket and others have clips to go direct to the battery. A week ago I saw one that I believe was 400 watts and it was only $25. That seemed like an excellent price to me.

Okay, probably a real dumb question: I have the 115 AC converter, it looks like the input is for a cigarette lighter. Do I need some sort of adapter so i may plug in a -- oh, I don't know, a computer maybe? Where would I get the adapter? Thanks to all. Really liking the 4R. I have 325 miles on the beast. Gas milage isn't too good, especially for a V6. Maybe it needs more of a breaking-in period. Average 16 mpg, mostly city, little bit of highway. And I'm going by the mpg on the readout. I don't really know what the actual mpg is. Still, the best vehicle I've ever owned and I've had everything from corvettes to corvairs. For you youngins, corvairs were rear engine cars that Ralph Nadar had pulled from the streets because they were so dangerous. Thanks again, everybody.

Yeah, I linked to that one in my 4ROTM thread, but got one that was 10 bucks cheaper and had no shipping because it was in my local costco. I like it better too because it fits below my DD cargo shelf.

arra: Do you have the obvious button on your dash? If that is what you are talking about, the place to plug in you computer (if it is the appropriate watts/amps) is inside the center console. Sorry if I misread you question.

If it looks like a ciggarette lighter it's just a standard 12V power jack. The 115V AC plug is down inside your console box. It has a power switch located on the left side of the dash. No adapter is needed -- it's a standard receptical just like what you'd have in your house.

I belive the 115AC converter is the input on the center counsil next to the transmission shifter. Jeeeze, do I sound dumb or what? Right next to the shifter on the driver's side is a small pop-up lid where you might keep change and right next to that is the, I believe, the AC converter. I hope I'm making myself clear. In other words, there is no place I should be looking for where I can plug in a normal AC plug, is there? Do I need an adapter to go from this AC input to any normal two-prong AC plug? Sorry for sounding like such a dumbass.

No adapter. Lift the armrest portion of the center console and it should be in that compartment. On the wall that is closest to the front of the car. This is all assuming you have the factory 115V option.

No, that is not the AC plug you are talking about, it's just a standard 12V outlet common to all 4th generation 4runners. If you have the 115V adapter, it's INSIDE the center console box (i.e. under the armrest). If you don't have a plug in there AND a "mains" switch on the dash then you don't have the 115V option in your truck. In that case you can buy an aftermarket inverter that plugs into your 12V plug (up front or the one in back) and provides 115V AC.
