I have never really needed an always on/hot power supply....until now. Is there an easy way to make the 12v plug or USB plugs always have power when the 4R is off?

yeah, the easy way is to run a new feed from the battery to an always on 12v plug where you want it (or from a new distribution panel from a new feed if you want to be fancy and plan on adding other accesories)

The easiest way that I know of is to just run a wire in through the firewall to the spot you want to add the always on outlet.

I just did this yesterday to my rear outlet. I ran a wire from the hot side on the back of the power convertor under my passenger seat. You can also wire to the fuse box with a fuse tap to a spot that always has power. You cut the green wire and tap into that, make sure to cap off the other side of the green wire or it my short out when you turn the key on. One would think that there would have to be a simple way of just jumping the connection in the box to be constant rather than running new wires. I do not have a schematic for the truck yet but will investigate it when I do. I know in the 1st gen Taco you need only pull the pwr outlet relay and add a jumper

I'd like to know this as well. Kinda frustrating to have to run wires everywhere. But I get to know the truck better I guess.:shrug:

I will be trading in with-in a year so was not looking to run wires through the firewall or anything too complicated for now. It looks like a couple of the other options might be a quick fix for it though and do-able! Thanks for the responses!

I’m need to tap the 12V outlet for a rear view camera. How did you access the wiring to the 12V jack? Did you pull the connector with the Green/White wires or does the outlet panel pop out from the front?

No, but probably not necessary. If you drive more than 40 minutes a week I'd assume an ipad mini would stay charged perfectly fine. I would advise not using the 4runner USB as it has a very low current threshold. I'd use a 10W or more USB plug in the 12V outlet. Also the DC converter will always use some power if you do this due to inefficiency. Probably rather have to recharge the mini than risk ruining my starting battery.

Thank you for this tip. It worked out perfectly without any added wiring.
One piece of advise is it seems its polarity specific so be sure to plug the add a circuit in the exact orientation as the picture, also put the fuse in the same socket closest to the wire. I did it the wrong way and it kept my radio on instead of the 12v sockets. Hope this helps anyone that runs into this issue

i tried to do this over the weekend however my radio and 12 volt socket is on. I thought I had the polarity incorrect so I flipped it in all sort of combination but only was able to get the radio and 12 volt on or else it was off. I just want the 12 volt socket under the radio on. Am I doing it wrong

Almost sounds like you are back feeding the circuit and causing the radio to power up… What are you trying to wire and to where?
Also your comments about polarity and “flipped it in all sort of combination” are pretty concerning… check polarity, use a meter, make sure it’s right… Don’t do what you did because its recipe for problems, generally speaking.
i got 2 "add a circuit" and splice it together. I took out the 15 amp in the top right spot, put it in one of the add a circuit. plug it back in. The 2nd end of the add a circuit I place it in the empty slot (4th down on the left). When I put it in initially nothing turn on so I reversed it and it came on but both radio and 12 volt socket.
I'll re-check my work later and use a meter to check. thanks.

I just plugged it in exactly like the picture. I want to warn that it killed my battery. I have an 8inch tablet plugged in powered with a camera app on always and it killed my battery.
