14 degrees and no heat

Just a quick question - left for two weeks from the frozen north to go back to Texas - started the Runner up and nothing seemed out of normal. Started up after work and I realized my ac/heater fan wasn't working. Thought maybe it was cause the block wasn't warmed up (my wife's SIENNA does that until it warmed up enough to blow heat). Warmed up - still nothing. Any suggestions? Anyone ever had this happen? 2010 SR5 ~90k miles

On a normal truck, the first thing I'd check would be the coolant hoses going into the firewall, see if they're hot when the radiator hoses are hot. But I don't know the 5th gen, it might have the heater core in the front diff for all I know. :happy:

The fan works, right? All you're chasing is a lack of heat? Because if the fan isn't working at all that's going to be a completely different issue.

The 1st thing I would check is the blower motor and associated fuse.

Your 4runner does not have "smarts" in the climate control system to wait to turn the blower on till the coolant is warm.

If the fan is working follow Kid's advise above.

It's the fan (for now) - hopefully everything else is working (ac and heat).

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Thanks - I'll check those today. I was thinking that, but it seemed weird to me that one of those would go out just from sitting in the cold for two weeks without running. Hopefully it's something that simple.

Ok now you gotta help me out, what does PSA stand for? I googled it and got Prostate-specific antigen.....I assume not what you were going for.
 
Quick Update

A quick update just for those that might happen upon this thread in the future:

So I've found that all the vents still work (when changing the flow knob), and the heating element is still working as I felt warm air flowing through the vents once I got up to speed, and cold air when I switched it from full heat to full cold. So all good on those fronts.

Did some more searching and assuming that Toyota uses a parts bin for most of their mechanical items, I would think that the AC blower (fan) and resistor would be the same as the Tacoma or the same as the 4th gen 4R - I saw that some people had problems when the truck was subject to extended frigid temps - something about the motor seizing up, and just bad resistors. I cleared out a space in the garage last night - put a space heater in the cab and got it up to 80 degrees. Tried the fan - no go. Thus, I assume it's the fan or resistor - as stated before, everything else in the HVAC system is working.

Engineer - as you stated you would look at the fuse - there are a number of them for the HVAC system (I haven't taken the time to look at any of them, and I'll check them all), but just wondering if you our anyone else knows which one is for the fan itself. Here are the fuses for the HVAC/AC System:

Engine Box: 9, 17
Driver Side Box: 20

Also, apparently there was an issue with the fuse relay in the 4th gens (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/119134-ac-blower-motor-resistor.html) - wondering if this is still an issue on the 5th gens.

Thanks again for the help and guidance. Hopefully I can get it fixed soon as we're supposed to have a high temp tomorrow of -2 and a low of -16 ...
 
I don't know nor do I have access to the FSM at the moment, I would just pull them both and check as it should take only a couple minutes. It looks like Toyota already issued a TSB per the link you provided so I don't think that's the culprit. If the fan/blower isn't running and the fuses are fine I would likely jump to ordering a new blower motor assuming they are <$100. GL and report back, if your in the Twin Cities I have no problem lending a hand if you need, but I assume its a easy job in the passenger footwell.
 
Try hitting, kicking, or tapping the blower motor while it's turned on. It's just an electric motor, and maybe it's hit a dead spot on the brushes. Fairly common and might just solve your problem. If not, get out your tester and see if there is power to the motor.
 
Update #2

Alright - update time - tried hitting the motor while it was on - no go. Went through and tested the plug to the motor - had a full 12.5v to the motor. So the plug and everything else electrical is good. Tested the motor - sure enough - motor's out. Right at ~89,990 miles - and two winters in Alaska and one in ND. I guess I kept the truck too warm and wore it out :noidea:

At least I know, and I shouldn't have to drive into work next week bundled up like I'm on a rocky mountain hunting expedition. Got a new blower from rockauto with the discount code - woohoo!!
