15 years old and Plan B

Id rather the 15 year olds would take the pill instead of bringing something into this world they cant take care of. If a fetus is considered life then i guess im a murderer for sneezing into a tissue and throwing it out. You cant expect these kids to be the best and make the best decisions. Things like this need to be implimented so we are not bringing life into the world that cant be taken care or burden someone else

While I agree with you, my parents did raise 4 boys. None of us are gay. We are all married, well off, and none had sex in high school. We were not Christians either. We were raised the old-fashion way. No church group. No scout. My parents was very watchful over our activities...my mother knew my whole schedule in school! No, they were not overbearing, but I also knew the grave consequences of doing stupid things...they gave me enough ground to grow, but I knew my limits and the consequences of going over it.

Does Plan B lead to more sex? I don't know. You don't know either. Brushing it aside as an impossibility is not good either. It is a social experiment that will teach us down the road. Does it lead to medical issues? We will find out from the folks that take it regularly. It is a medical experiment as well. Who will pay for all this and the consequences? Me, you, kids, etc..

Of course, as noted above, some liberal folks are pushing for Plan B for ALL AGES. Nice. 1engineer, your kids are grown up and doing well...you're lucky. It sucks when you are the parent of kids that are about to enter this world with today's wide open sexual policies.

I understand. I noted that parents had to be involved and sounds like yours were. You are right about the medical implications too.
We had the same worrisome thoughts when my wife was pregnant 21 years ago. "How can we raise our kids in this day and age?" "The big deal back then was AIDS and the spread of it into the heterosexual population. If you are a responsible and concerned parent, every generation comes with challenges. My parents worried about hippies, LSD and Vietnam and free love. Their parents worried about the depression, the dust bowl and WWII.

Actually, to be honest, if my kids make a poor decision, then it is my and my wife's fault. We are to blame for screwing up. Just like my parents, they take pride in how we turn out and responsibility when we screw up.

Now, when they are out on their own and do stupid things, well, they are dumbsh!ts for doing it. :D

Only until their friends start to have influence Thai. That is THE most influential group behind you as parents. Behind that is teachers. Hopefully they will learn enough from you guys to know when their peer is leading them astray. Like I said though I have witnessed several of my children's friends get sucked down into a black hole despite good parents.

1engineer and Thai, it sounds like you guys did something right. I may be pleading for advice on here one day should I ever become a Dad.

Well, I have not done anything right YET. 1engineer is a lot more successful than me! Hopefully, my wife and I will get our kids thru it all with minimum fuss. :)

Maybe that is why my parents would constantly tell me that "friends are like poisonous snakes!" (rough translation)

Very true. With my eldest, we're blessed that he has a fantastic group of close friends with families that we are very friendly with. My youngest, not so much. But having strong local active family members helps tremendously and we are blessed with that as well. Much of this is possible due to geography and culture in different parts of this country. In the NY/NJ area, it is very common for entire families and extended families to be within an hour of each other and remain very (almost too) close.

Bottom line.......Much of what we as parents do ultimately is lead by example without a word being spoken. Kids get a very strong understanding of proper behavior and security from watching and hearing their parents and the ways they interact with each other and around family/friends. Sometimes "teaching" and lecturing gets you no where and can actually be counter productive.

Ok, so, you're a CONSERVATIVE who hates guns. I can live with that. Thanks for correcting me.

I'm neither but I never use politics as an excuse for anything. The people in this country make their own beds and cause their own plight and they often don't realize it. It's always much easier to blame someone than to work hard and take personal responsibility.

I way too often see people owning boats, cars or homes they can't afford and have no business being in. And then all they do is ***** about one thing or another.

I agree with whomever said what about plan A. 15 year olds having sex?! I feel like this is an episode of Jerry Springer we now live in. And to the people who say they knew 15 year olds who were sexually active, this does not justify the means and make it ok an the norm. Again if we went back to proper parenting ie. communication, discipline, and NOT trying to be your kids best friend and be politically correct, I really dont think we would have as many misinformed lost children as we do today. But what would I know I have only been working in mental health for 5 years and seeing on a daily basis and my father has been a Psychiatrist for over 25 years. To simply pass off the problems with quick fixes is not beneficial to the young adult. You then wonder where these individuals come from with self entitlement without any input. Something has got to change and this is not the right direction. Republican/democrat/libertarian/independent. . . . "rightfully" ACCEPTING young couples engaging in sex is different then ACKNOWLEDGING young couples having sex and what the true root of the problem.

I fully support 15 year olds getting plan B. There's no denying that kids are having sex at an earlier age and not taking the greatest care. It's inevitable and I'd rather have my daughter have the opportunity to take it than get pregnant by some one night stand or douche boyfriend. Plan B isn't cheap and won't be used frequently as a form of birth control, but accidents do happen. For a 15 or 16 year old it's not always convenient for them to have sex. They are under their parents roof and many parents aren't cool with letting their kids have sex under their roof. So the kids will end up sneaking around and having sex in places that a condom is not easily accessible. Also the parents may freak out and overreact if the girl asks for permission to get plan B so the girl hides it till she actually is pregnant.

It's not like Plan B kills unborn children or anything. It's merely a last form of birth control. Me and my fiance have used it after a night that wasn't protected. It happens to most and kids are going to make stupid mistakes with sex. Might as well let them have all the resources they can instead of being pregnant at 15.

I plan on talking with my daughter and being open about all that stuff. Sex happens and being educated and having the right resources will prevent teen pregnancy. An open line of communication will go a lot further than locking her in her room or banning her from seeing guys.

To the people who can't believe 15 year olds have sex, really? What generation do you think we live in. Puberty is happening earlier and earlier in kids than in the past and they are curious. I was 18 for my first time, but I had plenty of friends who were 14 or 15. It's going to happen and becoming more of the social norm to have sex younger. You can't say all you guys who were teenagers during the 70's were angels?

Ahhh...communication. Yeah, being open. Let them explore for their own benefit. Let them make mistakes. Don't punish either! They lose self-confidence. You need to be nurturing and supportive of all his/her mistakes. I hear you brother.

Hmm, come back and tell me how that goes with your kid. I think that that is how most folks do things nowadays...and look at where we are now...Plan B is being discussed for all ages.

Ahh, another RonMaiden...a closet Democrat. A person who claims to be "independent" yet shows uncontrollable liberalism. Who was the last Republican president you voted for? I hope that you would be honest.

I completely agree with Johnny. I'm not a parent, but I think I can safely say that kids tend not to listen to what you say, but rather follow by what you do. Actions speak louder than words, and I think that's very much the case with teenagers/young adults.

O I'll punish, but I made plenty of mistakes when I was younger and my parents never grounded me. It obviously depends on the kid and their personality with what works, but I appreciated how my parents raised me and their trust. They told me how dissapointed they were and gave me some punishments like not being able to drive my 4runner, but they were never over the top or severe about it. It gave me the feeling that I could talk to them about stuff I did or problems I was having without being judged or resulting in a punishment for being honest.

I'm not saying this will work for everyone and some kids are idiots and there is nothing you can do about it, but restricting a product that can help them in a time of need doesn't seem right. I've used it and while I was 24 at the time (not 15), I may have had a second rug rat running around if it wasn't available.

I expect my kid to rebel, hide stuff and be a brat. It's an important part of growing up and maturing. Where exactly do you think were are nowadays?

BTW, I appreciate the discussions and don't take anything anyone says personal. Everyone grew up differently with different morals/backgrounds and it's good to express/exercise all aspects. I do hope we can keep a civil and mature conversation regarding this subject throughout the thread, not saying that anyone hasn't already.

I'll lay it all out there for you.... I think this is the order.....

Reagan
Bush
Clinton
Clinton
Bush
Kerry
Obama
Obama
Christie?

There you have it. Wouldn't change any of them. Had hope for Romney but no substance there. Retread. Like MCain. Republicans need a strong candidate and hope FoxNews goes away - they blatantly insult people's intelligence a wee bit more than MSNBC.
