16, 17 & 18" wheels

The Sport (spoke) edition 4-Runner DOES HAVE larger front brakes than the SR5 models. However, in 04 and 05 the SR5's were shipped with 16" rims with the option to upgrade to the sport edition 17" 5-spoke rims for a $100 option. You could not order the Limited rims for a 03-05 SR5 model. All that was changed in the 2006 model year. I have seen 06 SR5 models here in California shipping on the truck with the Limited and Sport model rims. Toyota has given the 4Runner limited 18" rims for the 2006 model year.

Close, but not quite.

The initial '03s (with gray cladding) came from the factory with the following:
- SR5: Standard 16" steel wheel, optional 16" alumnimum wheel, optional 17" 5-spoke aluminum wheel (same style as the Limited)
- Sport Edition: Standard 17" 6-spoke wheels
- Limited: Standard 17" 5-spoke wheels

Then came the optional SR5 color-keyed "appearance package." The wheels and tire combos, however, remained as-is. There is an '03 4Runner SR5 in my neighborhood with the Appearance Package and 16" steel rims.

In April '03, Toyota made the appearance package standard and also made the 16" aluminum rim standard on the SR5. The 17" rim remained optional for an additional $100 (the same difference between the two rims when they were both options).

From '03 through '05, the SR5's optional 17" rim and the Limited's standard 17" rim were identical. The Sport Edition's rim remained unique to that trim.

Now, in '06, you still have a standard 16" rim on the SR5 and an optional 17" rim (both carryover designs). The Limited now has it's own, unique 18" rim that's exclusive to that trim.

Makes sense too -- if you spend all that money for the Limited trim, it should at least look a little different on the outside from the SR5 (at least more than just the color-keyed mirrors).

This is just what comes from the factory, of course, and does not preclude mixing and matching at the dealer and after the sale.

The bigger discs will help brake fade due to heat caused by frequent sudden stops or towing down hill. Won't necessarily improve stopping distance with the first panic stop but should show some differences after a few quick stops. Also I don't believe you can fit 16" rims on the Sport as the 16" don't clear the bigger discs. I've never tried as I've only seen 1 SR5 4runner in the DC Metro area with the 16" rims.

I am not doubting your info one bit. Just wondering where it came from and if the source has data on 04 & 05s. Is it a web site or the Stealership.

It is interesting that all the models use the same pad regardless of trim, engine, or driveline choice. I would think since the SEs have a larger Rotor they would get a larger caliper and pad to match the rotor. But I can also see this could be a way to help keep cost down for Toyota.

If you look up the part numbers on partznet.com, it lists them as applicable for 03-05 models.

Need help identifying rims

I have a 2007 SR5 with factory 17" five spoke wheels. I'm looking to replace them with the factory option 17" six spoke wheels. How much did the 4th generation wheels change stylistically in that generation? I've located these, but I'm not sure what year they're from.

Those are 5th gen trail wheels. They come stock with 265/70/17 tires, which are typically the largest you can fit on the 4th gen without minor modification to prevent rubbing. I would pull the trigger on those if they are reasonably priced. They look great on the 4th gen.
