Can you put 17" 4th gen rims on a 2.7L 4 cyl. 3rd gen with the 15" factory steel wheels? and if so do you all think it'll strain the engine and tranny too much. I'm pushing 230k miles now and for the most part its running fine - don't wanna mess it up just because I changed the wheels out but the steel wheels are too damn ugly.
17 Inches on a 4 Cyl....good idea or no?

hard to believe but wheels way less the tires. So going up in rim size but staying overall diameter on tire will be less weight 90% of time. Example 31x10.50x15 weighs 65lbs a 31x10.50.17 equiv. weighs 60lbs. (weights are for demonstration purpose only and may not be actual).
OK maybe not that drastic with all tires but just checked one manufacturer
31x10.5x15= 38.9lbs
255/70/17= 37.4lbs (31.1x10.2)

You should be fine as long as your not trying run above ahh 31-32ish in diameter.

my 4runner is in the same position. I have the tundra 17s now. it's still just as slow as ever. it's probably slower.
Do it if you want, I think it looks good and I won't be changing mine back.

I guess it decided for itself today its a no-go. Woke-up this morning and warmed the 4Runner up....as soon as I start to leave down the street and come to the first stop light I hear a thud like I got a dead body in the trunk and then as I get up to speed it happens again.....I think my transmission is starting to give, I'll have it looked at this weekend just to be sure, pretty sad though if its the case - probably won't put the money into fixing it because of the mileage which sucks because the body is perfect, no rust or nothing and everything works on it (minus whatever this problem is)...damn.
