17" wheels wheels with that stock tire size (265/65/17) will give you a softer ride. This is due to the increased sidewall height on the tire that adds cushioning on bumps.2008 limited v8 , 18" is OEM. Wife hates carI need snow tires. What if I chg to 17" wheels-tires , 265-65R17? What difference migh tI notice in ride-handling ?
BTW, I am in 60193 looking for 17" wheels/tires. Anyone local to me selling?
The increased tire sidewall height also adds additional roll when turning as as the tire is more dynamic vs a wheel which is static.

Also I'm sure you probably know, but make sure if you buy new tires to buy P rated tires and not LT rated if you are looking for a "softer" riding tire.

You'll probably have a better time finding a variety tires for 17" wheels, my buddy just went through this on his FJ that has some 18" wheels (it came with XD Wheels when he bought it).
I'm guessing your wife isn't a fan of "big SUVs", that seems to be the more common complaint that gets thrown around by most women in regards to anything bigger than a Scion XB.

TPMS sensors and snow tires are a problem...
If the snow tire wheels don't have sensors then the light will come on. That would be fine, but unfortunately someone decided that tire shops can be liable if they do anything that defeats the TPMS system, so many shops won't install snow tires without sensors. (Side note: If anyone knows of a shop that will, let me know and I'll be happy to give them my business). You might be able to get around it by having them mount the snow tires on the 17" wheels and tell them it's for your snowblower or something, then install the new wheels yourself at home. That's assuming you keep your 18" wheels with the regular tires on them.
You can get a set of sensors for the new wheels, but if they have different ID numbers (likely) then you need a scan tool to program the computer to recognize them. Independent shops might not have it, and the dealer will likely want to charge you $40 or more to do the programming. You can do it yourself if you but a cheap Techstream cable (see threads elsewhere on the forum).
The other option is to just remount tires twice a year, but most tire shops will charge you about $60 to do that.
So in other words, a system that's supposed to make us safer (TPMS) and tire shop liability to maintain the system that's also supposed to make us safer, make us less safe by making it harder and more expensive to get snow tires.

You should have the suspension checked.
I bought a used 08 Limited V8, and it rode horribly.
It turned out I had a fancy toyota suspension called "xreas", and the
shocks were leaking.
It's super expensive to replace with the factory shocks, so many people
just remove the whole system and go with aftermarket shocks and upgraded
springs.
Once I made the change, the ride difference was HUGE. I also put on polyurethane sway bar links, replaced the sway bar end links that were worn out (bought some made by [MENTION=98153]MStudt[/MENTION] ( and replaced the tires with Michellin Mud and Snow rated tires (but I kept the 18" wheels), because the tire I got are more for on-road driving with occasional, light off-roading, as opposed to some of the more aggressive tread designs on more off-road oriented tires.
As an FYI, I went with Bilstein 5100 shocks ($350 delivered from one of the forum vendors), and found some used toyota springs from an FJ cruiser.

My point is, make sure that the problem isn't the suspension before you start changing your rims and tires.

Phil, - no xreas suspension - @125k miles I thought oem suspension was ready for a chg , so I did the bilstein shocks, new rear coils , new front FJ 4x4 coils. The difference was slightly stiffer - probly due to front coils. So I could go back to stock front coils but I need snow tires and will pursue that path first.

Here's an option for the TPMS Sensors...
If you choose to get a cable and the Toyota "TIS" software, once you have it set up, you can program in a 2nd set of tire sensors.
I bought the OEM tire sensors for $53 each from Tire Rack.
The "TIS" software allows you to program a "main" set of tires, an a 2nd set of tires. So whenever you switch between your winter and summer tires, once it is set up, all you would have to do is go into the TIS software, and change the setting from "main" to "2nd" for the tires you're using.
I suppose (in theory) dealerships and possibly independent shops COULD do this too, but they might charge you more that it's worth, and/or they may not be clear on what and how to do it.
I've included some screen shots from vehicle for reference. Although I only run a "main" set of tires, you can see where the software allows you to select a "2nd" set, and I'm fairly certain that you can then put in the ID numbers for each sensor on the 2nd set.
Just an option.

I ditched my Limited 18's for some 17's. Currently running 265/70/17 tires and I like it. It is more than 3% difference, but I like the added overall height

I really love the look of the stock 18" Limited wheels, have no desire to change them.
