175k or more miles... should I be worried??

I've been looking for an 04-08 runner for about 3 months now. Originally I didn't want anything over about 140k but after seeing all the posts here about how dependable these suckers are at mileage close to 200k I'm considering looking for one with higher mileage.

Being that I have a company truck and won't be driving it that much anyways what should I have to worry about? As long as I find one with good service records should I be ok you think? Looking for the V8 but will take a V6 if the right color and all.

Thoughts?

You could always pay a couple hundred bucks for a compression test and inspection for peace of mind. Could be worth it if the price is right and if you're prepared for the potential of pricey repairs.

That or keep waiting and possibly increase your search radius. Keep an eye out for a Lexus gx470, too.
 
Original owner with 175k on mine.

I'm about to drive it 4,000 miles to Alaska and not think twice. The car is as tight and drives just as it did the day I drove it off the lot.

Find one with maintenance records and WITHOUT rust and don't think twice.
 
Don't buy an 03 or 04. 05+ has a 5 sped tranny and a vvti engine. As far as that many miles I would be more concerned with interior wear vs mechanical issues. I would have the vehicle looked over but fully expect that unless you buy from some one on here yiu are going to replace a lot of brake and suspension parts

I personally am looking for an 07 plus with perfect interior and body and bad tires, brakes, and suspension

If its got good service records and the T belt on the V8 has been changed at least once, then I would have no issues with that kind of mileage. The proof? I just bought my '07 sport V8 with 139k miles and every single record since new. The overall condition of it was great as well and that's the real thought I'll leave you with...I looked at a white runner before I bought mine and within 30 seconds I knew it had been beat pretty hard. The paint was rough and had spray touch ups in a couple different areas and the interior was average at best - I just didn't feel good about it and walked away. I had to drive 2 hours to find mine but it was 100% worth it.

What about an 04 with the V8? Any issues with that year model/motor?
 
Great truck for me

I only have about 130K on my "05 SR5, bought new and maintained religiously. Only left me on the side of the road once. Great offroad truck and I take it on the beach frequently. Some things I replaced over the years - brakes and front calipers, recently had a CV Joint boot tear so replaced the whole joint (about $275.00), various bulbs, oil filters, plugs, tires, regular maintenance items. I had 2 major repairs; a bad wire and/or harness on the engine immobilizer ECU which required removing the dash (truck would not recognize chip key and would not start) , about $800.00 at the dealer and my A/C evaporator core went bad last October, $ 752.00 at a local Toyota specialty shop (the dealer wanted $ 1300.00) Overall, broken down over 12 years, very low yearly cost to maintain.

The truck still runs and looks like new but I live near the ocean so rust on the frame can be an issue if the vehicle you buy came from near the beach (or up north where heavy road salt used in the winter is a concern) I keep after mine, scraping and repainting any rust that turns up, definitely eyeball the frame. Other than that I wouldn't hesitate buying one with 175K if it's been maintained well.. One other note, on the '05 6 cylinder there is no timing belt, it is a chain, so no worries there..unsure of other models.

I'm at 154k and drives like it has 54k on it. Like suggested above, find one with good maint. history and rust free and you're pretty much good to go. Speaking of, if you're willing to travel I have a pretty clean '07 I just posted in the classifieds

If you were closer I'd definitely look at it. My price range too.

04 with the V8 is nearly indestructible. 05 and later V8 added the vvti and air injection which can present problems later on. 03-04 does not have these.
I purchased an 03 V8 Limited 4x4 with 144k in 2012, now at 224k and have no issues whatsoever other than wear/tear items that need replacing. Just had timing belt done at 220k and the toyota tech said the motor looks/sounds/runs rock solid.

I would note that at 175k the v8 is coming up to its second timing belt change... Especially if the first one was changed at the suggested 90k. It depends though, mine at 112k had not been replaced yet.

Also note the 03-04 v8s DO have the 5 speed transmission, while 03-04 v6s do not.
 
Ok so just to clarify the 4.7 V8 is different in the 03-04 models than the 05+ models? If so, I wasn't aware of this. I thought VVTI was only on the V6 models.

That's crazy talk. I wouldn't exclude 03-04' because of the numbers on paper. I agree that if you can find an 05'+ that is comparable in maintenance and mileage to an 03-04' go for the 05'+ but...again, don't just write them off. Fewer moving pieces. There are 1,000,000+ mile 2uz-fe's still driving around the planet. Yeah. That is 6 zeros.

I wanted something around 150k or less. Ended up getting a 05' v8 4x4 with 187k. Drove it almost 4 years, did some nice mods, sold it with 249k for over 4K more than I paid for it...
I just couldn't afford the gas anymore. I loved that thing!
It was one of the cleanest around. I listed it when I found a v6 I liked. The guy came and looked at it. Said he'd take it for my asking price. The one I wanted sold. I got cold feet told him I wasn't sure and would have to find something else. A few days later he offered me an extra $1000. I still almost didn't do it. My friends thought I was crazy for not jumping right on it.
I finally gave in.
Oh, the same weekend I bought mine, we bought her 06' v6 4x4 with 140k. She's at the beach right now in it and it's sitting on about 255k...

I just told him what I would do. And that is what I would do. They are still nice vehicle but if given the choice I would steer towards the newer models with more horespower, torque, and better tranny that's all. I ain't hatin.
