1987 Toyota Restoration

Just starting the process of restoring my 1987 Toyota 4Runner. Maybe you guys could give me some advice on where to find OEM parts at good prices, or at least on the lower side of OEM parts.

Looking for:

1) chrome front & rear bumpers
2) Rear quarter panels R & L
3) Wheel well trim
4) Front grill

I also wouldn't mind replacing the rear tailgate with electric rear window.

Now I know some of these parts are not going to be cheap. I plan on sinking quite a few $$ into this restoration. I want to do it right because I will be in it for the long haul. I have had the vehicle since 1993 and it has been sitting in storage for about 15 years and it is going to come out and and undergo a complete workover.

I could never get myself to part with it so I'm going to restore it. Always loved the truck.

I usually use this site Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Toyota Auto Parts and Accessories to find cheaper official Toyota parts. I don't know if you'll find the parts you listed specifically, but it is a really good site to get cheap parts. Going by what I've went through personally. I would drop the tank and look inside to see how dirty it is, install a new fuel filter, new gaskets for everything, see if your timing chain is good. Maybe check the water pump and oil pump as well. But honestly I'm no expert, I'm just going by what I've changed and the changes I've seen in my truck. I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable guys will also chime in and help ya out.
 
Glad to hear ur gonna restore it. As for OEM parts, u can still get some from the dealer. Mostly I get my parts online thru amazon, e-bay, TRDparts, and even jcwhitney. Amazon and jcw have free shipping usually. Good luck and post lots of pics. :surfer:

P.S. Don't forget the salvage yards. There's gonna be stuff u can only get there.

I have had surprisingly good luck with Rockauto. It's not OEM, but I've gotten bumper replacement parts from them and they are quite stout.

Are you going full OEM restoration?
 
I would like it to be as close to OEM as possible. I know the truck is almost 30 years old and some parts will be harder to find but I'm pretty good at combing the internet for stuff that I need.

How about interior parts? Can I still get OEM floor carpeting or who would be a good source for that?

What are some other good sources of aftermarket parts in case I run into road bloacks?

I have not ordered from these people yet but they still sell the weather strip for the removable hardtop and those gravel shields that attach in front of the rear wheels. They show exploded diagrams and they have parts for consoles:

I am in the planning & gathering stages right now. I will be ordering parts etc over the winter and then get the project rolling next summer. I am looking forward to getting into this project.

1987 4Runner, 22RE, 5-speed manual tranny, silver body with black roof. Plan on using as many OEM parts as possible and aftermarket parts when/where needed.

Will be asking questions throughout the winter and then posting pictures once I drag it out and start the process.
 
If you happen to come across a place that sells OEM seat upholstery, please post it up! Both my 1st and 2nd gen need new fabric and I'm having no luck finding anything close to OEM... just universal crap that technically fits nothing.
