1989 Aisin manual hubs on a 1990?

The local Pick a Part yard has a 1989 4Runner, 3.0 5 spd with manual hubs. Was thinking it might be a good pick if they'll bolt up to my 1990. It'd be cool to have the option of having 2wd Lo now and then. I'll keep searching the site, but I figured someone might know already. Ask, seek, knock...

Found a good write up on the job. My only question is about the spline count for the two years. Are they the same...? If so, I think I may have to grab those hubs.

They are the same. You are good to go. Crazy easy when converting from ADD like your 1990, no need for a hub kit.

It is worth every penny to throw manual hubs on. It is great to have nothing spinning up at the front end, especially if you ever tear a cv boot, etc. Allows you to save the joint by taking it out of service, temporarily covering it from the elements until you boot it again.

You should def pull those and use them. I never understood why they did away with disconnecting hubs. I guess ease of shift on the fly, but at the cost of CV axles having tons of miles on them.

unfortunately a lot of Americans are lazy and don't wanna get out to lock hubs.

I got rid of ADD with a straight axle

Yes it's the same count, it's the 85 and older solid axle hubs that are different spline count.

Now I just hope I can get to them before someone else does. May have to bring some tools in to work and burn a few hours of comp time tomorrow. Maybe today...

Well, I got to the yard, and they weren't Aisin hubs after all. They're SuperWinch, and I didn't have any Allen wrenches with me, so they're still there. I figure for about the same money ($35 each) I can probably find a set of Aisin on ebay. From what I've read, any money spent on other brands is money you could have spent on Aisin and not have to buy twice.

You all know better than I do...should I go back for the SuperWinch?

You are going to get mixed opinions on this, especially on an internet forum where people tend to be over anal, and over read things.

I would say for $60 a set of superwinch hubs are good as long as they work. It is getting harder to find Aisin hubs for cheap, as people are getting wise to the purest demands.

I said this recently on another forum...and I will say it here..

This situation reminds me of the time someone told me "you can't reboot a cv axle, once the boot tears you need to replace the axle". I used a split speedy boot ten years ago, and the axle is fine to this day (and so is the boot). I cleaned the joint, greased it, glued and clamped the speedy boot on. Cv Axles aren't magic, you grease them with clean grease and keep the water and dirt out they last. When a boot splits magic doesn't release into the atmosphere. Being overly anal doesn't always pay off, often it wastes money.

I say pull them and use them, as long as they work.

I think you have a good point, though I am shocked to hear that people can be really opinionated on Internet forums...yeah, right! Seriously though, I've done a bit of searching for Aisin hubs, and it seems folks know what they have, and the prices reflect it. Also, my plans don't include hard core rock crawling etc. My intent is a low budget build and something the wife and I can do together now and then that doesn't involve clothes or shoe shopping. (It's okay. She's worth it.)

With that in mind, I plan to go back with the right tools and grab the SuperWinch hubs Saturday. They both seem to switch smoothly from lock to free, and the donor vehicle seems to have been treated decent until the wreck.

Thanks for talking me down off the ledge, sir.

Well, I went and got them. Got the driver's side on and ran out of daylight. Really need to pick up a 54mm socket... Seems to work and switches positions smoothly. Locked the CV shafts turns, unlocked it doesn't. Don't guess I can ask more than that, right?

Oh yeah, it does get better - when I went to the counter to check out, the girl said it came to $40.50. I had planned on $70+tax, so B-B-B-B-BONUS!

Maybe someday I'll find some Aisins, but til then, I'll rock the SuperWinch hubs.

Run the superwinch but keep looking for aisin...aftermarker hubs dont have as much spline engagement and are more prone to failure

Yup, that's the plan. I'll keep my drive flanges and associated parts in a little bag in the back in the event I lose a hub. It'd be a pretty minor trailside fix.

Ah, see - $40, damn that is a hell of a deal to be able to lock and unlock your hubs on your second gen. For all you know they will last the entire time you drive the truck. Good find.

They should be fine with regular offroad use on 33" tires. If you are doing major rock crawling you have more to worry about than the hub...like the entire axle lol.

BTW, I paid full retail price (amazon) for my WARN hubs and then a mile marker conversion kit. Something like $250 total lol. I had no time and it was winter when my autos failed.

Yessir, I'm on 31" tires at the moment, and no plans for anything bigger. This 4Runner will only see occasional light to moderate off road use while it's in my possession, so I don't anticipate any problems with the SuperWinch hubs. I've tried them out on my property, and they do what they're supposed to. Pretty pleased with that $40. I think I'm about $1200-1300 into this thing with a $2000 start up budget. Need to get the heat working and find/fix a coolant leak (another thread) and it'll be ready for a day at Turkey Bay. Eventually a winch, but some recovery gear first.

Thanks for the input, sir!
