Old truck,*Was running good.
V6. 5speed
One day it just didn't start. Would crank over fine, but no start.
Checked the fuel pressure by jumping the FP and E1. Nothing. Replaced the fuel pump and filter.
Fuel pressure good now.
Still no start.
Ran a code check. No code.
Checked cold start injector. Not leaking.
Checked spark from the coil. Good spark.
Checked for spark*on one plug. Good spark.
Checked for injector signal of one injector. Light flashes. Seems to be good.*
Checked the timing belt. Timing still on.
Bench checked the air flow meter. All good.
So.... Got fuel. Got spark. Timing is good. Air flow test good.
Need help.....
What I'm looking for is the pin spects for the computer(ECU), and possibly a print out of the factory diagnostic chart.
Better would be a*web page*where I can view a factory manual.*

I saw that link

I looked through that link.
The plugs they show for the ECU are different.
The one I have has 12-9-5. The one they show is 13-8-11.
They don't show any color code, but I think it would be different anyway.

I'm in Kaneohe.
Used to work as a machanic.
Even worked for Toyota a long time ago.
Wish I could find a FSM someplace.
Would you know if HCC still has FSM in the library????

Shoot I can ask around...not sure if they get the fsm if they did garans someone prolly stole um lol...

So the motor cranks? Wants to start but no start?
I would try double check the afm..intake elbow also

The FMS is a free download from a link in a stickyd thread, on the top of the classics forum.

Have you checked compression? Fuel Pressure?

Welcome to the forum!

You might consider replacing the EFI relay(about $13 at dealer). That is what it was on our 1990 4runner.

Help

I did down load the FSM from the link. I can't seem to open it. Any help on this would be greatful.

Fuel pressure is over 40 now that the pump was changed.
I'll take a compression test, and post it. Should be good as the truck was just running before the problem started.

I tried swaping the EFI relay with another of the same number. No good. Still no start.

I've down loaded some ECU pin out's from around the web. All seem to be from newer 4Runners.
The ECU on mine has 24-18-10 pins, others I've found had 26-16-22 and 26-16-12.

Kind of strange. I would have thought they would use the same ECU for a few years.

It probably has an issue with the ECU. I'm away from my factory manual set, but I'll take a look tomorrow eve. With Japanese manufacturers, they switch parts, sometimes at numerous levels through a year due to JIT. Using the VIN for parts is crucial. Just got back from your state(HI, Maui).
Aloha

Pin out/wire diagram

If I could get a copy of the pin out diagram from the ECU, and a wire diagram, that would be great.
Seems the values haven't charged from year to year. Just the location on the ECU.

In the FSM I have for my 1986 p/u, there is a trouble shooting section. That would be a great help also.

How did you like Maui????
I'm on Oahu. Used to go to Maui once a year.
I like it better there, but not to many jobs and most things cost much more.

Maui is a wonderful island, hopefully we can keep getting out there from time to time. Yes, one needs to watch price points. It was quite crowded, compared to the last time we were there(mexico effect?). The weather was mildly odd, guess you guys have had weird weather season like we've had on the west coast.
The trouble shooting sections are huge in the manuals. The manual set I have for our 1990 4runner is "four" volumes. I'll see what it looks like when I get home.

Compression

All cylinders 160. So good.
Plugs need to be changed, but wouldn't cause the no start problem.

Got good compression. Got good spark. Timing is good. Fuel pressure is good. Cold start not leaking. Air flow bench test good. Injector signal to one injector is good. Battery good. No codes set.
What am I missing????

What did the fuel pressures(running and rest) look like? Have you check for massive vacuum leaks? I'm assuming there is not an anti-theft device on the truck? You might check the ignition switch, might not turning all the way to the end contact point.

Fuel pressure

Fuel pressure is at 40psi+. It fluctuates when cranking. So I'm thinking the injectors are pulsing.
Removed and checked all the intake hoses. No problems found.
Good thought on the ignition switch. I'm getting spark, engine crank over fine, fuel pump comes on, and one injector fires, so I think it's good, but I'll check it out anyway.

The truck was driven, then parked for about an hour. Radio was played while parked. When tried to start, it just cranked over. No pump noise heard from the tank.
Got it towed. Checked for fuel pressure by jumping at the DLC. Nothing. Changed the pump and filter. Pressure back at 40psi. But no start.
Did as much as I can do without the pin-out volts chart.

Try roll it and kick start it with the clutch..if it runs go from there
Also what is your battery sitting at voltage wise?

Battery

Battery is strong.
Just to be sure I swapped it with another. No help.
I'm starting to think it may just be the ECU.
Know anyone who might be willing to swap for a test????

Might have found one

I think I might have found a wire diagram with the color code for the wires.
Has the correct number of pins on the ECU.
Need to find trhe pin-out volts somehow.
All the dead ECU problems I've had would not fire injectors, not fire plugs.
I've not come accross one that would do both and not start.
Anyone had this happen?????

Think I may have found the problem

This thing has been a pain in the ............
I have big spark from the coil wire to ground. Igniter system working good.
I get a smaller spark from the plug wire to ground. Spark, but not a strong as from coil. Check cap and rotor. Everything looks good.
I then noticed pieces of curly metal stuck to a pick-up. Strange.
Everything tight. No play in shaft. Looked closer and found more smaller pieces. Some colored black some colored metal. Strange.
More closer inspection and I noticed, what looks like a loose washer under the reluctor. More than likely the bearing went bad.
But.... This wouldn't keep the engine from starting.
Any thoughts???????

Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took a while, but got it.
This is a strange one. First tme I've had it happen to me.

The bearing in the distributor failed.
The shaft stopped turning. The gear on the shaft is just a press fit. No pin or keyway. Strange.
When the shaft stopped turning, the gear kept turning.
When the bearing let go, the shaft started turning again. Only now the timing is way off. Turned out to be almost 3 cly's off.
Gear was also pushed down the shaft about 5/16".
Pushed the gear back down, reset the engine to #1 TDC, installed the distributor.
Engine started. :bigok:

Now I just have to find another distributor.
