1997 Gear Light Indicator in Dash?

Does anyone know if 1997 4Runners are supposed to have the gear light indicator in the dash? I've seen several 3rd Gen Runners with this, but mine isn't there/doesn't turn on.

97's didn't have a gear indicator in the gauge cluster at all.

If I'm not mistaken (I don't claim to be an expert), but I think it's when the revised the gauge cluster to have a digital odometer. so.. '99+ I think?
