I now know about locks

oh do I ever know about locks. I can say with confidence now I can re-key any cylinder in the truck. I get how they do it and how all that jazz works now.

very small potatoes vid explaining.... just some basics so I can remember next time I need to do this.

The only bad thing really is the Toyota wafers are pretty expensive. enough so I would have spent as much buying wafers as I would paying a lock smith to just re-waffer the cylinders.

Thanks for diving into that and posting it. For the most part, 4runner locks and house door locks are pretty much the same principal. Different sized wafers and preload springs. I could imagine the wafers would cost a lot from Toyota, especially with the normal stealership "Matrix Pricing" structure it has.
Would you think it would be safe to gather wafers from old existing old Toyota lock cores to make a re-key? Or, would it be too worn out to go that route.

that is exactly what I did in that vid. I re-used all the old wafers from everything I had to do the glove box. like a lot of quality Toyota parts the stuff just needs to be cleaned up and re-lubed and it works just fine. of course if you had something that was super worn out?

it was a trial and error to see what wafers worked with the new key, I knew that should work but wanted to see how much of a headache it would be, and it was easy. so you don't need a key code, you don't need stupid extra software to decode anything to get a bite code sequence really @ all.

you just put a #1 wafer in and try the key, does it move the wafer to the correct position and center it on the cylinder? yes? move on, otherwise try the next wafer #2 and try again. there are only 4 wafer sizes so it does not take long and after a couple you can even start to guess the next one just by looking @ the key.

wafers are like .75 - 1$ each so it's about 10$ cost supplies to re-wafer an existing cylinder. I can say the new ignition cylinder is smooth like baby bottoms so.... yea new wafers are nice.

the door handles on this truck are really really nasty... I have soaked them and cleaned them but they still.... yea not really. the backing fabric on the door cards is also starting to fall off.... I ordered some sample and will try to match the color on moon mist. it's not the easiest color to match.

In the interim waiting on sample I have some natural soft leather left over from a different project.... so lets see how hard this is?

obviously color match not so great but I actually really like the natural tanned leather look.... but... once sample come in I should be able to pick a decent color in the blue/grey moon mist shade to match.

I love the look of the tumbled leather.... soft but rugged in that how the west was won 1950's nostalgic dream sequence we all have; but in reality know the western expansion was bloody and cruel. wow that escalated quickly... shake it off ok ok...

It's really not that hard to do it. I have a couple of spare door pulls laying around so I can do a couple more and perfect my inner Etsy. is that a thing? hmm if not it should be.

BTW: just order a couple of door kits from Russia. that was a good lead those things drive me nutters once they wear out.

wow..

pickup body, roll frame out, roll new frame in, lower and adjust only takes 30 mins. I did a ton of prep work. I like things to go as planned when the time comes.

radiator, heater core lines, rear heater lines, ebrake cable, fuel lines. AC can stay with the body. I ended up pulling the starter wire harness out from the fuse box and doing that with the frame.

I have been working on that frame since this last spring. a couple of hours after dinner whenever I could sneak out into Santa's workshop.

it's a boat load of work, but that depends on your end game. I like the "looks like it came from the factory" appearance once I'm done. I take my time, no rush I want things to turn out looking nice and be serviceable.

if you have access to a lift and some help you could totally do it in a weekend.
Would be a couple of 10-12 hour days. just really depends on how far you want to go and what condition the donors are in. other than the engine, trans, steering rack, and 3rd member nothing else was usable. rust belt 21 years of winter rusts things into solid non serviceable globs.

Jeez, the things you have to do to keep our ole' 3rd Gens on the road in the rust belt... I've seen a few members do frame swaps and I'm super glad I don't live East of the Rockies!!! I'll say, the Taco guys have it worse, even Toyota acknowledged the frame rust--- even my local Toyota dealer, here in town, has a couple of frames out back--- AND I live in an area where rust isn't really an issue!! I'm really lucky, my 98 had rust coating applied when it was brand new-- in Vancouver, so the frame and body are almost perfect (aside from a few scratches and badges of use! I check everything in the Spring and clean the smallest spots (usually the rear end and peripheral body parts) and hit them with rust paint. When I did my engine replacement, I cleaned everything well, and hit the exposed inside fender wells and frame with POR15. As far as I'm concerned, as long as I can keep the rust at bay, everything else can be repaired-- I'm planning on keeping it till I can't buy gasoline anymore (thanks Elon Musk), or I can't get up and in it anymore!!

the key kept getting stuck and just looked terrible... like a metal eating rat had been chewing on it....

it was time for a new CYLINDER & KEY SET, IGNITION SWITCH LOCK. I had been looking for the complete set but it's out of production and I was not able to find a complete set.

for $75 with 2 new keys and a brand new ignition cylinder done deal.

However now my key will no longer match the door so I headed down cheap knockoff keyless entry. In particular this one seems to be decent with 11 billion reviews.

so lets tear it all apart and see what we can do here

starting with the lock/unlock triggers from the riveting document 1998 4Runner Electrical Wiring Diagram EWD319U we see the red/white and red/yellow on the IF1 blue connector plugs so I spliced into them on the drivers door side. this was pretty easy actually.

this next part you will have to use your imagination because I was wayyyy to angry to slow down and take a picture of it.

you can ground out the Red/White wire coming from the stalk to the tail relay. to do this I ended up having to use another relay to swap the + signal out of the black box to - signal. not hard at all since I already all the wires I needed.

once that is done you can lock and unlock all the doors, and the front marker light and rear running lights flash a couple of times. The interior lights also flash since this circuit sends power to the interior illumination circuit.

all in all it works just like factory except no bleep bleep sound... and that is ok for me.

it's working out great and I love it, still... using it daily since I posted this.

yes to the question can you get them all to lock/unlock the drivers door has the global lock/unlock switch on it so... that is why I use the drivers door. if your drivers door does not lock/unlock all the door now... then something is wrong with your lock actuators.

my only complaint and it's a minor one... is because I did the send power to the tail light relay it blinks all the lights and if the drivers door is open it will buzz the "your lights are on" warning for just a second and yes that happens because I wired it that way... oh well. but it's super minor compared to having new keyless entry and it only happens if you keyfob bleep bleep with the door open so...

it's really not a hard job but it will make you want to drink a shot of whiskey at some point during the process.

^^Thanks for the reply. It's always great to hear about real world impressions! I've got all my mechanical straightened out with my new ride and now dealing with the "nice to have options list". Keyless is the next item now that my ignition cylinder is moving.
All my doors lock with interior button so I think I'm off to a good start. I'll have to check out that product as it is a great price for such a functional mod!

my door cards and handles were terrible from the previous owner who let their dog climb all over the back and passenger. luckily they had seat covers so that part is still pretty mint in this truck.

I got some vinyl and 3/16" foam and went to town and stripped down the door cards and re-glued everything with black vinyl.

super happy with how it all turned out and it's a huge improvement over the 1/2 falling off dog urine scented old ones. I like the black, it goes well with the moon mist interior so we are going to keep going down the replace it with black as the need arises. ++the inside of the truck now has that contact cement smell on warm days.

the back door garnish was starting to look pretty bad and the weather stripping was gone.... this part is no longer available as far I know? would love to find a source for a new one from 3rd party?

used a different junk yard garnish repaired all the holes and scraps scrapes and repainted it in black with shiny stuff...

waffered up a matching key cylinder so that will be fresh again

got the plate light and new handle + my bag of clips

this should be a quick job( yea right )
