project discontinued. Sorry guys

Making a thread for this build. Going to be starting on it soon. It's currently a 2wd 3.4 truck with a bad engine. I already have a 4.7 and 4wd tundra automatic transmission. Planning to use a j shifter transfer case and Tacoma manual hubs. Also adding a locking rear end to it. I know she doesn't look like much now but I got it for free and don't mind big projects. Progress to come soon.

Today was supposed to be a simple engine disassembly to get bent valves replaced due to a broken cam gear bolt. The cylinder walls looked perfect. I pulled the upper and lower pans in preparation for painting the block and that's when it all went south. The pan was slam full of metal. After a full disassembly I found 4 out of the 5 main bearings hammered to death. No clue what happened. But now I'm having to get the crank turned down and rebuild the motor completely.

Transmission im using outbof a truck we parted out awhile back. Has 310k miles on it and shifted perfect. Clean fluid too.

Very ambitious - good luck. Bummer that the engine wound up needing a full rebuild, but at least you will have peace of mind knowing it was done right when its back together...

Rather than pull the body off my frame and have the body stuck on the lift the entire time I build this truck, I opted to use the frame out of a parts truck we bought awhile back. We needed a motor for another 4runner and picked this one up cheap. Can you guess why? The frame is straight and rust free so I will be converting this one to 4wd and doing all of my suspension and other work so when I'm ready I can simply roll my old frame out and this one in. Don't mind sarge. You'll be seeing him in a lot of pictures.

Planning to add some 1uz rods in place of the stock ones because I may or may not add a rear mount turbo later down the road and don't want to trust the pencil rods.

You have to move the trans mount with the 2UZ swap anyway - so a 2WD frame is just as good as a 4WD frame to start with. The only difference is the trans crossmember location...

I knew I was going to have to move the crossmember. Both my truck and this frame are 2wd. I went to the local pull apart today to make sure they still had a truck out there with a 4.7 and they did. Owner said it ran good before it was out out. Should have the money to get it this week. Hopefully the rain let's up long enough for me to go and pull it. Luckily their entire yard is paved so I won't have to lay in the mud. Hoping to go pick up the 4wd donor trucks from a friend's house soon.

Caught a break in the rain to run down the street to the pull apart and get a new engine. A couple of people that work there told me it ran good before they put it out in the yard. It's been there for months. No clue why anyone hasn't bought the engine. Opened it up when I got home and it was spotless inside. Looked brand new. Spent the day converting it over to tundra everything and got my trans bolted up. Next step is to get the 2 4wd donors moved to the house and get the frame finished.

Wow that engine is spotless, nice score! how many miles are on it?

Sorry for the lack of progress. I'm poor and doing this on one hell of a budget. I picked up a parts frame a friend of mine had at someone else's house. Plan was to use all the 4wd parts off of it but unfortunately it had an add diff, one automatic hub, one manual hub missing the lock assembly and the t case was full of water and rusted up internally. I acquired a manual front diff and manual hubs and axles today. Need to clean and reboot the axles and paint the spindles but hopefully that will all be going onto my frame soon along with a set of 06 sequoia brakes we have on a parts truck.

Make sure you use the matching rear diff ratio to that front... Worst case, just swap the passenger side output tube over to a matching diff to your rear.

I'm going to steal the ring and pinion gears out of the truck the front diff came out of. The front diff is a 3.90. Since I'm doing the v8 and it's going to be my daily that ratio should be fine. We have 3 Tacoma locker rear ends so I'm using the chunk out of one of those and just going to regear to match the front diff.

Small update. Got my new inner cv boots finally and got the cv axles reassembled. Also decided not to use the diff I had originally installed which was a 3.90 and found a 4.10 ADD diff and swapped the ADD tube out for a manual diff tube. My new upper ball joint boots should be here tomorrow and I'm also hoping to pick up a good transfer case tomorrow. So far all of the 4wd parts are installed in the frame and the 06 sequoia brakes are finished with new rubber brake lines. Brake lines I bought 7 years ago for my first 4runner and never installed. Glad I hung on to them all that time. Sorry about the slow progress. Hoping to pick up on it soon. Got the 4runner unburied the other day so I just need to get the frame finished up so I can swap it out.
