1998 LIMITED needs stereo advice!

I'd say the stereo and speakers are about used up in my 98 LIMITED.

I do not want amps, just to refill the stock holes with a new HU and speakers.

From what I've read, I should go 6.5" in the front doors and 5 1/4" in the rear doors and 1" tweets fit in the stock housings?

My past vehicles have always just had the standard HU and 4 speaker set up. How do I set up a standard 4 channel HU with the 6 speaker set up my runner has? Is there a stock amp already installed that is decent and I can reuse? Or do I HAVE to install a new amp, since it's separates in the front? Or should I just go 4 GOOD speakers in the doors and leave the tweets silent?

Looking for the most bang for my buck, but will get quality as long as the install is easy/cheap.

Thinking about this HU, because it looks stock. Worried about trouble with thieves, if I get a new shiny looking double din that doesn't remove at all...

I bought the exact same HU. Looks good (and stockish) in there. Be sure to get the harness and solder it to the one that comes with the HU. Also, you'll have to bypass the factory amp. You can leave it in there and unplug it or do like I did and remove it altogether. Can't help with the speakers as mine are still stock. I'll be watching this thread though because I would like to replace mine at some point, but first sliders, rear bumper, skid plates, front bumper......yadda yadda yadda....

You can avoid an amp, you have just match up the head unit with the power requirements of the speakers you choose. The reason why amps are used so much is because most aftermarket speakers to work properly require more power than the head unit can provide with it's built in amplifier.

If you purchase speakers that more closely match up with the specs of your head unit, your head unit will be able to power them without any need for a seperate amp. (Oh and you will have to bypass the factory amp for sure, I forget what it puts out but it's like <10w per channel not enough for any aftermarket speaker.)

I'm sure there's a bunch of 3rd Gen Limited's on here that have gone about the same speaker route I'm thinking of? Can I get any insight on the highest quality sound I can get, that will fit into my doors and are efficient enough to run on this power?

Peak Power Output 45 watts x 4 channels
RMS Power Output 18 watts x 4 channels

Also I'm still wondering how the 4 regular door speakers work + having the 2 tweeters, when the power output is only x4? Do the tweeters not really count and can be wired along with the front door speakers, because they are such low power consumption??

I have Boston Acoutics for my home stereo and LOVE the sound from my ROCK GUITAR GODS!!!

The tweets will tie in with the woofers so you just have to wire from the stereo to the crossover, then there will be a + and - for both the tweeter and woofer off of the crossover. I went with Boston Acoustics all around in mine and the sound is amazing! I would suggest you try the stock speakers with the new HU before replacing speakers, they actually do really well with more power. Not anything like Bostons, but way better than I thought they would be

Thought I would chime in on this one. I have an 02 SR5 and just recently replaced my HU. I went with an Alpine CDA-9886 and it is awesome and powers my aftermarket speakers like a champ. My speakers are 6.5" all the way around and are Infinity Reference 6022i. With my old HU (Pioneer DEH-1400) which was ancient, they sounded just like factory speakers, but with the new HU, which is 55w x 4 they are incredible. I also have a Rockford Fosgate T1 12D4 power series sub powered by a Kenwood KAC-9103D mono amp. All of this put together in my car sounds great, I could not be happier. This set up lends itself to any music you may listen to. Thumps with rap music, hit every note seamlessly with jam band music, etc... All in all, this is a great setup and I would recommend any of these products to anyone. Hope this helps in the decision making process.
