1998 Remote Start on Manual Transmission?

Yes i assume, from the responses YES.
Yes i saw it roll foward. No it will not do much damage. It will be under the average deductible of $500

I recall one vehicle my buddy told me about. 911 GT2 RS. It got the headlight assembly, fender, bumper, carbon fiber hood, and some miscellaneous parts and pieces.

It was slightly more than the deductible.. LOL

So I am going to drop some factual data on you.

There was a gt2 variant in all these chassis.

Porsche 993 (1993–1998)
Porsche 996 (1998–2005) all-new body and water-cooled engines
Porsche 997 (2004–2012)
Porsche 991 (2011–Present)

Immobilized keys started with the 997 platform as standard. Since 2004.

It was not until 2007 did Fortin | Bypass modules, remote starters and alarm systems release a Porsche canbus transponder over ride interface that costs $800

In my partners 2004 turbo 996, it had the optional transponder key. This is a trim level below the coveted gt2. Let's say this 996 is not stock.

This turbo 996 gets 2000 miles put on it per year, the 06 turbo s cayenne gets all the miles put on it. I'm stateing this because 99.9% of the pricks that own porches will not install a remote starter on it. He doesn't drive it much so it doesn't need a remote starter.

Dropping all those facts about the gt2/911 chassis. Puts a timeline on the years remote starts were possible. Pre transponder years were easy peasy and probably had a non compustar system. Prick wanting a remote starter in it still applies.

Introduction of the das sensor was in 2011/2012. Compustar has been able to do remote starts since early 2000s. Many companies claimed they could do it. Technically they can, reality none can do it safely until the das was introduced.

So if this accident didn't occur within the last 2 remote start seasons, it has no relevance in this conversation as factual data. If it was not a compustar system, it also will have no relevance in this conversation as factual data.

I'm not saying to prove these things, I'm just saying let's put on the table where this "information" is coming from and see if it applies to the topic at hand.

I can also say, my buddies body shop has to fix the front end of a cobra mustang and it was more than the deductible too. YES I did the remote start alarm system in it too. Facts from that, it was a factory automatic when I did it. Customer sold it and second owner put a manual transmission in it. So this fact doesn't apply to topic at hand and can only be used as a example of a bad install.

Remote starts on manuals are safe.

It's just like the people that say the guns are killing people. It's not, it's the people using the gun killing people.

I'm not calling you a liar, I'm just saying all the facts might not be presented to you. The owner of the gt2 might want to blame the remote start since he is too ashamed to say he crashed it. Who knows, there is just not enough facts about that example for it to apply.

97 sr5 manual.....had it installed about 10 years ago and it has worked without issue. I never leave it in gear and if anyone is going to work on it, I notify them or disable it. I would have it professionally installed by someone with experience.

Despite the hype for "Compustar", it let the vehicle move, in their own promotional video.

The GT2 RS was a 2012 model.

Beyond that, I stated what my buddy said. He has no reason to lie, nor do I. He didn't mention which brand system the car had.

The customer admitted he made a mistake and left the car in gear.

Anyone who owns or has owned a Porsche is a prick?, good to know..

I've always wanted remote start in my manual 4R. I had one in my 2001 Corolla Sport, my 2001 Accord EX Coupe and I want one in my new 2009 Accord EX-L Coupe. (all A/T's)

What happens when you park on a hill & have to park in 1st or reverse?
The EB isn't that strong.

If the issue is warmup, and you always park it next to the house, you could put a block heater on it.... or just put a 100W light bulb in a box under the oil pan all night.

Have you talked to a Porsche owner lately? Going joke is "whats the difference between a porcupine and a porsche owner? prick is inside" They like Jeep people.

There's no hype for compustar, that stuff just works. Yes it moved 2 feet max. The porsche would have had to continually try to start for 3x each and every time holding the starter longer and longer. thus continually banging into what ever was near it. It will not cause the kind of damage you are describing.

Never meant to say your friend was lying, just retelling what he was told.
Its a rare occurrence that a remote start will cause the damage you describe.
Its even more rare that its a remote start in a 12 Porsche Gt2 and then you and i just so happen to be reading and responding to the same thread on the topic.

So most likely this vehicle had a NON Compustar brand, like something from DEI, or a older PRE DAS sensor compustar system. if it had a compustar, then it was user error, or installer error

EB not strong but use the force, lol joke.

Seriously though. You cant start the vehicle. Conditions 1, 2 and 3 need to be met.

1: pull ebrake, doors unlock
2: pull key out of ignition, no foot on brake, you can still have it in gear with the clutch pushed in BUT...condition 3 has to be met also
3: you need to exit vehicle, or it needs to see the door open and then close. then it will wait for you to lock the doors. once door is locked, "reservation" mode is set.

if you unlock the doors to get out or in, the whole sequence has to be redone.
if you open the unlock the door and open it, whole sequence has to be redone.
if you had the window open and bumped it into gear, the DAS sensor will stop it one it sense the car deviate from its original parked position.
if you had a dog in the car, it bumped the shiter into gear. DAS will pick it up and cause it to stop. dog bouncing around in the vehicle would probably set off the alarm anyways.

hope all this makes sense
If the issue is warmup, and you always park it next to the house, you could put a block heater on it.... or just put a 100W light bulb in a box under the oil pan all night.

i dont this would work to well in the more northern climates of idaho or chicago. Have you tried to buy 100w bulbs lately?

No pun intended but this article might shed some light on the subject
Lights out for the incandescent light bulb as of Jan. 1, 2014 | Fox News

As a matter of fact, I am a former Porsche owner. I also talk with several current owners on a regular basis. Including right now, as my co-worker is one. Yes, I've heard that old lame chestnut comparing a porcupine and a Porsche, or whatever make of car the person telling it is jealous of...

For the record, according to what I was told, the car did move less than 2 feet. It was in the owners own garage, and when it lurched forward, it hit a car lift and did some very expensive damage to the frontend.

Beyond that, this discussion is a waste of my time. The class-envy biased comments are ridiculous, and just a little sad.

Good luck installing your remote starter, which by your own admission can allow a car to move 2 feet, in circumstances where the owner mistakenly leaves the car in gear.

The pricks are Inside!...:lmao:

Give it up allready, nobody gives a dam about the stupid Porsche .....
gshadow325 thank you for brining compustar to our attention, after watching the video I'm more then certain this system will work for me, and to all the naysayers you have me LMAO:lmao: with all the "what if's" and Porsche stories, proclaiming how faulty the system can be.

This thread was informative before certain people started bashing the idea, yes our 5-speeds are better then your autos, and yes we can get a remote start too boot!!

ive had remote start installed on my 85 4runner for a bout 6 years. its a manual.

I have started it in gear once. it crashed into my garbage can:clap2:(while cranking), but I got to the kill switch before it actually started.

im pretty careful to always park it in neutral, and I wont use the remote start unless I KNOW for sure it is. but, as my garbage can story shows, accidents happen. im ok with those chances..

Clearly, the point I was making went way over your head.

The point was people make mistakes, and there's a chance it will cost you if you put a remote starter on your manual transmission car. Even the Compustar W/DAS which according to their promotional video, and an installer, can allow the car to move up to 2 feet.

The only reason I mentioned the GT2 RS in question, is because the installer claimed less than $500.00 in damage would occur in case of a mistake. The incident with the Porsche cost about 20 times that.

Put a remote starter on your manual transmission vehicle if you want, just don't whine if/when the car is left in gear, and damage is done as a result.

Bottomline, only engage the remote starter with truck out of gear. If someone services your vehicle let them know that there is a remote start or religiously put starter in "service" mode. Been using mine for a long time, if I am going to leave it in gear, I don't use the remote start.

Getting one installed on the 9th of December...

This is how it works...

You come to a stop (parking space)
parking break up
leave in neutral
they install a push button that you press (not sure what exactly it does)
get out of the vehicle while its running
close the door
use the remote to lock it and the car will shut off.

If you turn the car off before locking it then she wont remote start.

sounds safe to me.

fyi $250

"they install a push button that you press (not sure what exactly it does)"

this sounds reassuring LOL

"sounds safe to me" made me LoLz

might be the same system that was installed in the Porsche hahahaha

$250, you get what you pay for :banana:

Alright guys so here is how it works in "dumb person talk"

Come to a stop
Pull E Brake (This is the trigger)
Leave in Neutral
Turn key to off - Vehicle keeps running
Get out and lock it (Second Trigger)
Car shuts off and is primed for remote start.

If you do not lock the vehicle when you get out it will run for 10 mins and shut off and your remote start will cancel.

The only way to get the truck to shut off say you are parked on a hill and want to leave in 1st.... just don't pull the e brake until you turn the key off. Car will shut off like normal and will not remote start.

Questions / Concerns are welcome!

Now throw in a real life situation. Go back in and get your wallet. Bump it into gear by accident.

Remote start it?

Yep i missed a step. Once you unlock the vehicle it also cancels

If you left your window down or broke your window while leaving the car locked and put it in first then it would start in first...

So there is no safety?

You will are able to get the vehicle to start on gear and continue to try and start.

You will be like the owner of that Porsche.

Again, thanks for the lol. Hope nothing ever happens to you
