1999 4runner build highschool/college edition

Much overdue was a radiator skid plate. Just wanted to make one myself so after a couple hours of getting material, grinding, bending, and welding we have it. It's super basic and I will be doing a redesign, but for $60 I wanted to try it out and see if I like fabbing my own stuff. It was a lot of fun and I have better ideas for a better looking and higher clearance one. I did create new mounts to where the upper bolts go, but reused the stock mounting locations for the bottom. The reason I needed one is because the aftermarket Champion Radiator sit lower than the factory one, which made it impossible for the stock skid to mount. Anyways, just thought I'd share the little update.

Really haven't had too much time to post anything, but I've been doing a lot on the 4Runner.

Its was a total pain and took forever but hey I'm pulling over 10" travel up front and 28" fully flexed out.

Also, today is the 2 year mark for my ownership of this rig...hopefully things will progess a bit faster in the coming months

Exams are finally over, now I can have fun. went mountain biking with my brother and friend. It's fun because you actually have to use 4lo to get to the trails so I was able to get off the fire roads for a little bit. Also got to climb up an abandoned fire watch tower. I had a friend make me some wood shift knobs and I switched back to the chrome grandpa front end for now. Going to make some descent LED retrofits now and keep the chrome look.

Man I thought that was my 4Runner for a minute. I just bought a 99 one owner with 211000 miles on it original Florida truck in outstanding condition, just brought it in for service yesterday and have a new set of wheels on the way and a few more things planned. Not a ding dent or scratch on the body.

Well junk yard find of the year for me (and my crappy junk yards). Elocker axle picked for $220. Definitely crusty and doesn't have the actuator or wiring harness, but it's okay for that price. Later I will get the front diff to have the same gear ratio. Best part is that it only has 150K miles. I will clean, POR-15, and throw it in there hopefully over break.

Making some progress on the axle. Put POR-15 on it and going to grab a new motor/wiring harness and throw it on the rig at some point.

Also, replaced the 2nd gen front sway bar links for some heavy duty oem replacement ones. The old ones were too long and hitting the lower track arms from apoc industries. Feels better and no more smacking the lowers.

Does it make any sense to try to repair my father's 4runner if I'm still in high school and I don't have money? I mean I have some savings from my part-time job, I write essays for students and I'm very good at it. What are the symptoms that you think the transmission is showing?
Rough shifting?
Not changing gears when getting out of park?
Check the codes and fluid level.

Finally installed some LED retrofits in the grampa spec chrome shrouds. I honestly prefer it. The LED compared to the HID is insane. So much light output for $100.

I've been debating on LED vs HID retrofit projectors for a while now. Since you've had both what's your opinion on them? What brand HID and LED did you use?

I've honestly just used amazon brand for both. I would say GENERALLY LED is going to be brighter, simpler, and last longer. I never had a single issue with the HID's though in about 1.5 years of constant use (I always drive with headlights on). One thing to note with HIDs is that they have a high heat output, so if you live in a region where your housing could freeze over or if there can be snow buildup, HIDs are known to melt that off. I just like LEDs more because I don't have to worry about the colder conditions and it's just better light for the price. Also, it's less wiring because there's no ballasts. I'm sure if you get really high quality HIDs they'll have really good light output, but the Amazon LED retrofits are much brighter for the price.
