1999 VIP security system question

I just purchased my 4runner and I noticed that I have the toyota security piece on the left side of the steering wheel in one of the switch panels. I also have the VIP stickers on the front windows. When i purchased the 4runner I didnt get any remotes or anything and I can't seem to be able to find the security unit in the car. Can anyone help me locate that unit and probable locations as to where it would be. Thanks!

Security Unit

It is most typically a black box under the driver's seat. You can buy remotes for it off of eBay. Be careful that you buy the correct remote. If I recall, the black remotes work but some of the gray do not. Do a search for the FCC ID. The FCC ID for my remote is BAB237131-022

Here's a thread that describes how to program the locks. If you don't have the box under the seat you could try the steps to see if the vehicle reacts.

Thanks for the link! However I don't see any black box under my driver seat, but I do have the factory alarm display (the picture you posted) in my dash. What are the steps to trigger the alarm or test to see if there even is one.

I'm starting to think that the factory alarm display and the VIP stickers on the windows are just for show?

If you want an alarm/keyless entry, i would go aftermarket. Your factory alarm on your 4runner is over 10 years old. My factory alarm went haywire about 4 years ago. I wouldn't drop any money in it if you plan on relying on it.

I don't plan on using it, I just wanna know if I have that option on my 4runner. I already ordered an aftermarket security and remote start system that will actually be affective! Thanks. Are there any other places they can mount the "brain" of the factory security. It's bothering me that I can't seem to find it anywhere!

VIP (RS3000 or RS3200) systems were always under the seat, IIRC. So, if it's not there, it was probably removed in favor of an aftermarket system...which was then probably removed before the previous owner sold it. Check behind the driver side kick panel to see if there are any wire splices in the main harness down there.

I will check that out today. Thanks Qyota. Do you know where I can get removal instructions of the panels and what not needed to install a security and audio system? I know its just simple bolts and clips but I don't wanna end up breaking clips again like I did in my 93 hilux pickup. Thanks

For the kick panels, just remove the door sill plastic (4 or 5 exposed screws) and pull up. then, grab the kick panel from the back and pull towards you (straight back along the axis of the truck). That's it. Passenger side is the same.

The dash console is pretty simple too. Pull up on the cup holder, and work it around the e-brake handle. Then grab the back end of the next piece (around the shifters) and pull up. You'll need to work the boot off the plastic, it's just friction fit on there. Then start prying up the main console trim, pulling up and towards you. You'll need to unclip the cigarette lighter harness and accesory outlet harnesses. Once you get to the top, you'll need to reach behind and remove several more wire connections, just depress the tab and pull. There are at least 3 at the top (ECT/defrost, clock, window). Once that large trim piece is removed, you'll easily see how the stereo is attached to the dash frame.

whenever i installed a security alarm i always put it under the dash by the steering column. I try and hide the brain as far up there as possible. try both sides up in the footwells.

I was ableto find the unit!! It was zip tied and attached via some type of black sticky pad. I removed it and looked at it. I wanted to reset it by putting the key to te 'on' position and pressing the button on the security unit. But I noticed that there is no button. I opened up the security uni and it looks like the button piece is missing. I just want to make sure that the previous owner with the remote won't be able to access the car. Do u know if when I install the aftermarket security if it can bypass te stock? Do I just tap into those wires? Will I be ableto activate both? I want the 'toyota security' led to flash as it would with stock as well as the aftermarket LEDs. Can te sensitivity module from the stok system be used with the aftermarket system as well?

Sorry for all the questions. One last thing, where should I run my power from the battery to the amp? I don't wanna drill any holes. And what's the best place in the interior to run the wires from the deck to the rear cargo area. I want this to be a clean install. Thanks again guys.

One more thing, sorry guys, I am looking for an antenna adaptor but It seems as if there is NO SUCH THING for the toyota 4runner. What is another compatible antenna adaptor that can plug into the aftermarket cd receiver head unit?
